OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – Johnson County Community College pitcher Trey Ziegenbein had been penciled in by head coach Kent Shelley to be the ace of the staff for the 2020 season, but the 6-3 right-hander from Blue Springs, Mo., recently signed a national letter-of-intent to play at Missouri State University in 2019-20. He will have three years of eligibility to play for the Bears and head coach Keith Guttin.
Last season with the Cavaliers, Ziegenbein was named to the All-Region VI second-team and All-Kansas Jayhawk Conference first-team, along with the KJCCC Freshman of the Year honor. He logged a team-high 85.1 innings and finished the season 10-3 with 109 strikeouts and an ERA of 2.64. His 109 strikeouts are the 11th most recorded in conference history and set a new team season record.
Overall, Ziegenbein ranked second in the conference strikeouts, tied for second in wins, third in ERA, third in complete games with seven and fourth in strikeouts per nine innings at 11.50. He posted double digits in strikeouts six times, highlighted by a 13-strikeout outing in a 4-2 win over Metropolitan Feb. 26, 2019.
