
OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – The No. 2- seeded Johnson County baseball team posted a walk off 8-7 victory over No. 15-seed Garden City Wednesday afternoon after erasing an early five-run deficit and a one-run deficit in the bottom of the ninth in the opening game of best-of-three series in the Region 6/Plains District Tournament.
Carter Kelley, the reigning Kansas Jayhawk Conference East Division Player of the Week, homered to left field with two out to tie the game at seven in bottom of the ninth. Jake McClure followed with a bunt single, advanced to second on a walk by Bo Shinkle then scored with winning run on an error by the Broncobusters' catcher. McClure scored three of the Cavaliers eight runs.
Jeremy Comer was JCCC top hitter going 4-for-4 with a double, a run scored and an RBI. Easton Roe had a single, a double and RBI and Miken Miller and Chris Mancinas also drove in a run.
Josiah Golden, who was named the NJCAA Pitcher of the Week on Tuesday, logged the first six innings, and allowed five runs, four earned, off five hits and struck out nine batters. Keston Holeman pitched the final three inning to pick up the victory. The right-hander allowed two runs, three hits and struck out four.
Johnson County and Garden City will play the second game of the series on Thursday, May 8 at 1 p.m. A third game if necessary, would take place on Friday, May 9 at 1 p.m.
