OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – In a battle of top-10 ranked teams, the eighth-ranked Johnson County Community College men's basketball team upset No. 4 Highland Community College, 75-67, Monday night at JCCC Gymnasium. With the victory the Cavaliers improve to 19-3 overall and have sole possession of first place in the conference race.
Four of Johnson County's five starters finished in double figures as they accounted for 61 of the team's 75 points.
Freshman JaQuaylon Mays led the Cavaliers in scoring with 19 points. He was 6-of-11 shooting, with two 3-pointers, and a perfect 5-of-5 at the free throw line.
Sophomore guard Nick Larkin posted a double-double of 15 points and 11 rebounds, and flirted with a triple-double by dishing out seven assists.
Sophomore guard General Williams also put up 15 points, and sophomore forward David Turner added 10 points, six boards and six blocked shots. Hit six-block effort ties the third-best game in team history, and bring his career total to 115, second-most all-time at JCCC.
The Cavaliers will attempt to capture win No. 20 on Wednesday night when they take on Labette Community College in Parsons, Kan. They return home to host Hesston College on Saturday, Feb. 2 at 2 p.m.
