OVERLAND PARK, Kan. - The No. 1-ranked Johnson County Community College men's basketball team remained unbeaten, but it wasn't easy. The Cavaliers survived a scare by Baker University JV, edging the Wildcats 68-64, Monday, Nov. 25 at JCCC Gymnasium.
The Cavaliers outscored Baker by two points in each half to get the four-point victory and improve to 10-0 on the season.
Sophomore guard JaQuaylon Mays, the team's leading scorer, scored a game-high 16 points to lead the Cavaliers. He hit 6-of-10 shots including a 3-pointer, and was 3-of-4 at the free throw line. He also grabbed seven rebounds and dished out a team-best four assists.
Sophomore guard Macaleb Hughes added 14 points and team-high 11 boards for his second double-double of the season. Hughes 5-of-8 shooting and 4-of-6 at the line.
Other key efforts were turned by freshman guard Braijion Barnes (9 points, 3 rebounds, 3 assists); sophomore guard Nic Slavin (8 points); sophomore guard Kylan Thomas (7 points, 6 rebounds) and freshman forward Skyler Rhoads (7 points, 3 rebounds).
Trent Scheer led Baker with 15 points. He was the only Wildcat player to finish in double figures.
Johnson County will face another tough test when they host North Central Missouri College Tuesday, Dec. 3 at 7:30 p.m. The Pirates come in 11-1 on the season and ranked 16th in NJCAA Division II. The Cavaliers swept the season series last year to take a slight lead in the all-time series against North Central Missouri, 14-to-12.
