OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – Going into the final week of Kansas Jayhawk Conference play, the Johnson County Community College women's soccer team has a narrow margin of error to try to grab a postseason playoff berth. The Lady Cavaliers took one step closer to securing a spot with a 2-1 victory at Coffeyville Community College, Wednesday night.
After a scoreless first half, sophomore forward Kayla Brashear got Johnson County on the board first off a feed from sophomore midfielder Aina Blanch-Lopez in the 53rd minute. It was Brashear's team-leading 12th goal of the season, which ties for sixth in the conference.
Seven minutes later, sophomore defender Isabella Polanco put the Lady Cavaliers up 2-nil with her third score of the year, which proved to be the game-winner, her first of the season. Sophomore Morgan Carranza provided assist.
The Rad Ravens did manage to cut their deficit in half with a goal in the 66th minute, but JCCC's defense, along with freshman goalkeeper Olivia Ways, were able to keep Coffeyville out of the net the rest of the way.
With the win, Johnson County improves to 10-6-1 overall and to 6-5-0 and tied for fourth with Coffeyville in the conference standings. Johnson County can shore up a playoff spot with a win at Neosho County, Saturday, Oct, 19. If they suffer a loss, they will need Coffeyville to lose at Kansas City Kansas. JCCC owns the tiebreaker with the Red Ravens by defeating them twice this season.
