Johnson County goes 3-1 at Kirkwood Classic

OVERLNAD PARK, Kan. – The No. 3-ranked Johnson County Community College volleyball team came away with a 3-1 record at the Kirkwood Classic last weekend in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. The Lady Cavaliers opened play Friday afternoon with a 3-1 win over No. 17-ranked Lincoln Land Community College (18-25, 25-21, 25-18, 25-15) and followed with a 3-0 sweep over McHenry County College (25-11, 25-15, 25-16).  On Saturday morning JCCC fell to No. 1-ranked Parkland College 3-1 (19-25, 18-25, 25-22, 19-25) but rebounded with a 3-1 win over No. 12-ranke Illinois Central College (26-24, 19-25, 25-13, 25-16).  Johnson County is now 8-2 on the season. 

Sophomore libero Rylie Barnum proved why she was an All-America last year. She tallied 75 digs and had only one receiving errors out of 82 attempts. Barnum also had 11 service aces, including a career high eight in the win over McHenry County. Her eight aces are the second-most recorded in match in team history. Currently, Barnum ranks second in the conference in total digs with 176 and third in aces with 25. 

Freshman setter Kallie Fenscke posted a solid weekend running Johnson County's offense. She finished 72 assists, an average of 4.8 per set. She recorded double figures in all four matches, including a season-high 26 in the win over Illinois Central. Fenscke also tallied 22 digs. 

Freshman right-side hitter Mikayla Powell tallied 55 kills and hit .402 over the four matches. She toped double digits in kills in all four matches as well, including a season-high 18 in the loss to top-ranked Parkland. She hit a season-best .500 with 14 kills in the win over Illinois Central. 

Other key efforts were turned in by sophomore setter Ami Dias and sophomore right-side hitter Kayla Niegenfind. Dias compiled 61 assists and reach double figures in three of the four matches.  Niegenfind collected 45 kills and also reached double figures in three of the four matches, including a season-high 15 in the loss to Parkland. 

Johnson County returns to conference play Wednesday evening when they host cross-town rival Kansas City Kansas Community College at 6:30 p.m.
