Cavaliers crush KCKCC, set stage for Region 6 Tournament rematch

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – Five different players found the back of the net as the No. 15-ranked Johnson County Community College men's soccer team rolled to a 5-0 shutout victory over Kansas City Kansas Community College Wednesday night.

The win caps a strong regular season for the Cavaliers, who finish 11-4-4 overall and second in the Kansas Jayhawk Community College Division II standings with a 5-1-2 record.

Johnson County wasted no time taking control, scoring four goals in the opening half. The Cavaliers struck first in the fifth minute when freshman defender Peyton McCawley fed sophomore forward Marco Hernandez for his second goal of the season. McCawley added another assist eight minutes later, setting up sophomore midfielder Ben Points for his second goal of the year and a 2-0 lead.

The Cavaliers continued their offensive surge in the 23rd minute, as Points delivered a precise pass to freshman Thomas House, who buried his shot for a 3-0 advantage. Sophomore midfielder Griffin Heinen then added an unassisted goal in the 35th minute, giving JCCC a commanding 4-0 lead at halftime.

Sophomore forward Tanner Poirier kept the pressure on in the second half, firing three shots on goal before finally breaking through in the 57th minute to make it 5-0. Freshman midfielder Sei Fowler picked up his first collegiate assist on the play.

Freshman goalkeeper Daniel Wozniak anchored the defense with four saves to secure his fourth shutout of the season, improving his record to 7-3-3.

Johnson County and Kansas City Kansas will square off again on Thursday, Oct. 30, when the Cavaliers host the Blue Devils in the opening round of the Region 6/Plains District Tournament. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at JCCC.
