Cavaliers sweep Independence to improve to 16-5

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – The No. 8-ranked Johnson County Community College Cavaliers quickly dispatched Independence Community College in straight sets, 25-15, 25-19, 25-15. The sweep marked JCCC's third consecutive victory over a conference opponent and improved their record to 16-5.

The Cavaliers posted a team kill percentage of .348, led by standout freshman hitters Alana Brewster and Ava Esser. Brewster, playing middle/right-side, recorded 11 kills, tying her season high and marking her third match with double-digit kills. Esser, a freshman outside/right-side hitter, also finished with 11 kills, extending her streak to five consecutive matches with 10 or more kills and totaling 16 double-digit dig performances this season. Both posted strong kill percentages, with Brewster at .588 and Essar at .429.

Other notable offensive contributions came from freshman outside/right-side hitter Lily Waters (6 kills, .308), freshman outside/right-side hitter Adalyn Hemphill (5 kills, .500), and sophomore outside hitter Brooke Boyer (5 kills, .237).

The Cavaliers' setters efficiently ran the offense, with freshman Campbell Chabot tallying 21 assists and fellow freshman Cami Roberts adding 18. On defense, sophomore libero Carli Marin and Boyer each recorded 10 digs, followed by freshman libero Kennedie Witthaus with nine, Essar with six, and freshmen liberos Reese Daugherty and Adira Ewy contributing four each. Sophomore Avery Ringgenberg led the team with four blocks.

JCCC now heads to Normal, Illinois, Friday and Saturday for the Heartland Invitational, facing three Top-15 teams in the NJCAA Division II Volleyball Poll: No. 13 Illinois Central, No. 3 Heartland, and No. 6 Parkland. The Cavaliers return home to host a crucial conference matchup against No. 2 Kansas City Kansas on Wednesday, October 15.
