National Honors

All-Americans (18 NJCAA/4 NSCAA)

John Layman
Forward (1977 & 79)
1977 NJCAA Hon. Men.

John Layman became the program’s first NJCAA All-American, earning honorable mention accolades following the 1977 season.  The team’s leading scorer that season, Layman led the Cavaliers to an 11-4 record and program’s first Region VI championship.

Phil Gastl
Forward (1978-79)
1979 NJCAA 2nd-Team

Phil Gastl  became the second player in team history to be named All-American, earning second-team honors.  Gastl led the squad in scoring with 29 points.  He also led the team in scoring his freshman season.

Jeff Seiter
Midfielder (1981-82)
1982 NJCAA Hon. Men.

Jeff Seiter earned honorable mention All-American in 1982 while leading JCCC to a school record 16 wins and the program’s second Region VI championship.

Jim Ross
Forward (1983)
1983 NJCAA 2nd-Team

Jim Ross earned second-team All-American in 1983 while leading JCCC to its second straight Region VI title.  Ross led the Cavaliers in scoring.

David Bortnick
Goalkeeper (1985)
1985 NJCAA 1st-Tean

David Bortnick became the fourth individual to earn NJCAA All-American, but the first to be named to the first-team.  He is also the only JCCC goalkeeper to garner All-American honors.

Mark Mathews
Forward (1986)
1986 NJCAA 85-Hon. Men.

Mark Matthews put together one of the top offensive seasons in team history in 1986 and was honored as a honorable mention All-American.  Matthews tallied 46 points with 17 goals and 12 assists.  All three totals were team records.  Today they rank third, fifth and tied for third respectively.  

Sean Platt
Forward (1986-87)
1987 NJCAA 2nd-Team

A second-team All-America selection in 1987, Sean Platt proved to be a key offensive weapon, leading the team with nine assists.  His nine assists were the second highest season total in team history at the time.  He currently is tied for ninth on JCCC’s season assist chart.  He also netted three goals while leading JCCC to a Region VI title.

Ricky Stringfield
Forward (1987-88)
1988 NJCAA 2nd-Team

One of the top offensive threats in team history, Ricky Stringfield earned second-team All-American in 1988 after leading the team in points with 53, goals with 22 and assists with nine.  His 53 points and 22 goals were season records at the time, and now rank second in both categories.  Stringfield also set records for career points with 71 and goals with 30.  He currently ranks third in all-time in both categories.  

Scott Noernberg
Forward (1991)
1991 NJCAA 2nd-Tean

In 1991, Scott Noernberg became just the third player in team history to top 40 points in a season.  He finished with 42 points,  on 18 goals and six assists.  His efforts earned him second-team All-America accolades.  Noernberg’s 42 point season currently ranks seventh at JCCC, and his 18 goals rank fourth.  Noernberg is one of three Cavaliers to score four goals in a game. 

Shawn Beyer
Forward (1992-93)
1992 NJCAA 2nd-Team

In 1993, Shawn Beyer etched his name forever in the annuals of JCCC soccer.  A second-team All-America selection, Beyer set season records for points with 60 and goals with 24.  He also became the first and only player in team history to reach 100 points for a career.  Beyer  also finished his career with a school record 38 goals and 24 assists  He recorded four hat tricks in the 1993 season, including a four goal game against Allen County, also a school record.  Beyer’s freshman season is overshadowed by his amazing sophomore campaign.  He tallied 40 points with 14 goals and 12 assists.  In his two seasons, Beyer helped the Cavaliers post a 40-3-1 record, including a school record 21 wins in 1992.  Beyer continued his career at SIU-Edwardsville, then played professionally for the Kansas City Attack and Philadelphia Kixx.

Carlos Olivas
Midfielder (1993-94)
1994 NJCAA 1sTeam

Carlos Olivas became the ninth player to be honored as an NJCAA All-American, but just the second to earn first-team accolades.  Olivas was a key midfielder for the Cavaliers during his two seasons at JCCC, especially in the 1994 season.  Olivas helped lead JCCC to region and district titles, and a berth in the NJCAA National Tournament, the first in program history.  Olivas scored 34 points over his career with nine goals and 16 assists.  His 16 career assists tie for fourth on JCCC all-time chart.  Olivas followed with two standout seasons at Rockhurst, helping them to two NAIA National Championship appearances.  He scored 12 goals and had 13 assists for 37 points at Rockhurst. Olivas the played four seasons professionally for the Kansas City Attack.  He scored 120 points with one 3-point goal, 39 2-point goals and 39 assists.  He best season was in 1999-00, finishing with 59 points on 20 2-point goals and 19 assists.

Kyle Knop
Forward (1994-95))
1995 NJCAA 2nd-Team

Kyle Knop ranks was a key offensive performer during his career at JCCC, and a team leader on and off the field.  In 1995, Knop became the program’s 12th All-American after finishing second on the team in scoring with 21 points on eight goals and five assists.  His efforts helped JCCC to a 14-6-1 record and a Region VI title.  For his career, Knop was credited with 20 assists, No. 2 all-time.  He also tied for ninth on the career points chart with 50.  His freshman season, Knop set a school record finishing with 15 assists.  He also tallied seven goals and finished with 29 points.  

Paul Walker
Forward (1997-98)
1998 United Soccer Coaches 2nd-Team

Paul Walker became the first JCCC player to be selected All-American by the National Soccer Coaches Association.  He was named second-team.  One of the team’s steadiest performers, Walker was voted the top defender for the region in both the NSCA and NJCAA voting.  Walker keyed a defense that posted four shutouts and goals against average of 1.42.  He also chipped in offensively, netting one goal.  Walker had a goal and two assists his freshman campaign.

Eyob Jiregna
Forward (1998-99)
1999 NJCAA Honorable Mention

Eyob Jiregna was a key midfielder for the Cavaliers during his career at JCCC.  Described by head coach Jim Schwab as a steady, reliable player, Jiregna helped JCCC’s defense post six shutouts and record a goals against average of 1.33.  Offensively, Jiregna scored two goals and had four assists for eight points.  Both of his goals were game-winners. 

Pat Geraghty
Forward (2000-01)
2001 NJCAA 2nd-Team

Pat Geraghty quickly emerged as a force in the Johnson County attack, earning All-Region honors as a freshman while finishing with 17 points.  The next season, Geraghty proved to be one of the top players in the NJCAA, earning second-team All-America accolades after leading the Cavaliers with 16 goals, 11 assists for 43 points.  Five of his goals were game-winners, and four of his assists led to game-winning goals.  Geraghty helped JCCC post a 19-4-3 record, the second highest win total in team history, and a third-place finish in the NJCAA National Tournament.  At nationals, Geraghty had two goals and two assists and was selected to the NJCAA All-Tournament Team.  He closed out his career ranked fifth in scoring with 60 points, tied for sixth in goals scored with 22 and tied for fourth with 16 assists.  Geraghty also in one of only four players to record two or more hat tricks in a career.

Luis Pinto
Forward (2002)
2002 NJCAA 2nd-Team

In 2002, Luis Pinto became the 16th player from Johnson County to earn NJCAA All-America accolades. Pinto was named to the second-team after leading the team in goals with 17, assists with nine and points with 43.  His 43 points ranked 17th nationally.  His 43 points and 17 goals  tied the fifth-best season at JCCC in each category.  Six of Pinto’s 17 goals were game-winners, and three of his nine assists led to game-winning shots. 

Serkan Senar
Forward (2003-04)

2004 United Soccer Coaches 2nd-Team

Serkan Sener, known as Seko to his teammates,  became the first player in JCCC history to earn both NJCAA and NSCAA All-American.  Sener led the Cavaliers with seven assists, and was second in goals with 12, points with 31 and game-winning goals with four.  He also was a perfect 2-for-2 on penalty kicks.  Sener was not only a leader  statistically on the field, he also lived up to his captain role off the field.  He was one of 10 JCCC students to earn the Outstanding Student Award.

Lucas Rodriguez
Forward (2004-05)
2005 NJCAA Hon. Men.
2005 United Soccer Coaches 2nd-Team

Lucas Rodriguez became the second player in JCCC history to earn both NJCAA and NSCAA All-American.  A midfielder from Shawnee Mission Northwest High School, finished second on the team in goals with 12, assists with six and points with 30.  odriguez led the team with five game-winning goals, including the game-winner against Barton County in the Region VI Championship. is efforts helped JCCC to a 17-7 record, a region title and a runner-up finish in the District.  Rodriguez also has earned NJCAA All-Region VI first-team, NSCAA All-Region first-team and Kansas Jayhawk Conference first-team accolades.

Jorge Rivero
Forward (2013)
2013 United Soccer Coaches 2nd-Team

Jorge Rivero became the fourth player to earn NSCAA All-American in 2013, earning second-team honors. Rivero led the Cavaliers in points with 443 and goals with 18, and ranked second in assists with seven. He also was the conference’s second leading scorer, and ranked tied for 16th in the NJCAA. His 18 goals tied for 15th nationally. He was the most decorated player in the Jayhawk Conference in 2013. He was a first-team all-conference and all-region selection, and five times he was chosen the KJCCC/Verizon Wireless Player of the Week. He also was twice selected the National Player of the Week.

Alan Lopez

2022 United Soccer Coaches First-Team

Alan Lopez of the Johnson County Community College men’s soccer team was named 2022 first-team All-American by the National Junior College Athletic Association. He also was named first-team All-American by United Soccer Coaches, becoming just the fifth to earn that distinction in team history. Off the field, Lopez was one of 11 student-athletes named to the Men's Junior College Scholar All-America first-team and he was named the Scholar Player of the Year, the first in JCCC men's soccer history.  He is the 18th player in team history to be selected All-American, just the third to earn first-team honors and the first since the 2005 season. In the 2022 season, Lopez led JCCC, ranked second in the conference and 16th in the NJCAA with 33 points. He also ranked fourth in the conference and tied for 21st in the NJCAA with 13 goals scored. Lopez produced three multiple goal matches and scored four game winning goals, third most in the conference and 11th in the NJCAA. Twice during the season, he was selected the KJCCC Men’s Division I Offensive Player of the Week, earning the award in weeks one and 11. For his career Lopez finished with 63 points, 23 goals, 17 assists and six game winning goals.  His 63 points rank tied for fourth all-time a JCCC. He also ranks sixth in career goals, fourth in career assists and tied the career mark for game winning goals with six. Lopez was also as first-team all-conference selection last year and was also twice named player of the week.

NJCAA Player/Goalkeeper of the Week (15)

Michael Shadfar • Week 4 • October 1, 2008

Michael Shadfar was selected the NJCAA Men’s Soccer Division I Player of the Week for Oct. 1, 2008. Shadfar is the first player in JCCC history to earn this honor.  Shadfar led the Cavaliers to two victories during the week he was honored. On Sept. 25, 2008, Shadfar netted the game’s second and third goals to secure a 5-1 win over Neosho County. Two days later, he scored 58 seconds into overtime to give the Cavaliers a 3-2 victory over No. 8 Garden City. He was also credited with an assist earlier in the game.

Mark Saxby • Week 5 • October 14, 2009

Mark Saxby, a sophomore goalkeeper for JCCC, was selected the NJCAA Men’s Soccer Division I Goalkeeper of the week for Oct. 14, 2009.  He became the second player and first goalie to earn this honor.  Saxby led JCCC to a pair victories with his outstanding performance in the net.  He helped JCCC to a 3-1 win over No. 8 Garden City and a 2-1 win over No. 10 Barton County.  Saxby made 19 saves off 21 shots in the two games.  

Guillermo Aguilar • Week 2 • Sept. 2, 2012

Freshman goalkeeper Guillermo Aguilar was credited with three road victories including a shutout at Kishwaukee, to garner NJCAA D-I Goalkeeper of the Week honors in the second week of the 2012 season. He saved 11 of 13 shots on goal he faced in the three matches. He is the third player in team history to earn national honors, and second goalkeeper.

Jorge Rivero • Week 6 and 11 • Sept. 29 and Nov. 3, 2013

Freshman forward Jorge Rivero became the first JCCC player to be selected the NJCAA D-I Player of the Week twice. He earned his first honor in week six after scoring 10 points on four goals and two assists on the week. His second came in week 11 after scoring two goals, including the game-winner, in a 2-1 win over Allen in the Region VI playoffs. 

Trae Hunjak • Week 1 • Aug. 24, 2014

Freshman Trae Hunjak scored JCCC’s first two goals in a 3-2 win over Lincoln Land in the 2015 season opener for both squads. The next day he provided the game winning assist in the final minute to give JCCC a 3-2 win over Marshalltown. 

Edgar Valiente • Week 3 • Sept. 11, 2016

Sophomore midfielder Edgar Valiente played a part in 10 of JCCC’s 12 goals in the Cavaliers’ three games during the week of Sept. 5-11. He two goals and two assists in a 6-2 home win over Kansas City Kansas on Sept. 6. He provided the assist on JCCC’s only goal in a neutral site loss to Lewis & Clark on Sept. 9, and he had two goals and three assists in the Cavaliers 5-2 win at Southwestern Illinois Sept. 11. His first goal against KCK proved to be the game winner, and his second assist against SWIC led to the game winning goal.

Caleb Cothrin • Week 6 • Oct. 2, 2016

Sophomore goalkeeper Caleb Cothrin stopped all 10 shots he faced against Cowley, helping preserve a 1-0 conference victory for the Cavaliers. That performance earned him conference and national Goalkeeper of the Week honors Sept. 26-Oct. 2.

Pedro Ivaskowski • Week 4 • Sept. 22, 2019

In his only action of the week, sophomore goalkeeper Pedro Ivaskowski held No. 13-ranked Cowley scoreless in 110:00 mintues, which resulted in a 0-0 double overtime tie. This was his second shutout of the seaosn.

Sophonmore goalkeeper Pedro Ivaskowski earned his second national goalkeeper of the week honor after he registered eight of his nine saves in the second half of a 1-0 victory over Dodge City in the first round of the Region VI playoffs. The shutout was the fifth of the season, which ranked him tied for second in the conference.

Cole Stewart • Week • Sept. 6, 2022

In his first action of the season, sophomore goalkeeper Cole Stewart saved nine of the 10 shots he faced last week to finish 1-1-0. He opened the week falling 1-0 to Coffeyville and capped the week with a 7-0 shutout over Southwestern Illinois.

Sophomore goalkeeper Cole Stewart saved seven of the eight shots he faced last week to help preserve a 3-1 home victory over Neosho County to earn NJCAA Goalkeeper of the Week for a second time in 2022.

Sophomore goalkeeper Cole Stewart stopped 10 of the 11 shots he faced to help preserve a 2-1 victory over Dodge City in the first round of the Plains District Tournament.  That effort earned him NJCAA Goalkeeper of the Week for week 10. He also became the first player in team history to be selected national player/goalkeeper of the week three times in one season.

Alan Lopez • Week 10 • Nov. 1, 2022

Sophomore forward Alan Lopez netted three goals, two which were game winners, to lead JCCC to a pair of victories to earn the final Player of the Week honor for the 2022 season. Lopez opened the week with a game winning goal in a 2-1 win at No. 5 Barton which clinched a tie for the Kansas Jayhawk Conference East Division title for the Cavaliers, their sixth all-time. He capped the week scoring both goals in a 2-1 win over Dodge City to punch JCCC’s ticket to the semifinals of the Plains District Tournament.
