Jason Wichman will enter his second season at assistant coach at Johnson County Community College in 2023.

Picked to finish last in the KJCCC East Division race at the start of the his first season, JCCC men’s soccer team exceeded everyone’s expectations by earning a share of the conference title while moving up the national rankings to a No. 13 spot in the final NJCAA Poll. Cole guided JCCC to a 14-7-0 mark and one victory away from qualifying for the NJCAA D-I National Tournament and was named the KJCCC East Division Coach of the Year. The 2022 season saw forward Alan Lopez being named to the NJCAA D-I All-America first-team, just the fourth first-teamer in program history, and first NJCAA All-Ameican since 2005. He also helped coach seven players earn all-conference performers, with Cole Stewert earning Goalkeeper of the Year recognition and three All-Region 6 performers.

Wichman came to JCCC after serving as a women’s assistant at the University of Missouri Kansas City since August 2020. Prior to UMKC, he spent the previous eight seasons at Iowa State (2012-19) working as the first assistant/goalkeepers coach.

“I am thrill to announced the addition of Jason to our awesome Johnson County Community College men’s soccer family,” said Cole. “Jason is an incredible coach and a fantastic individual to help lead our young student-athletes during their time here at JCCC. He has spent time at prominent programs and has a proven track record of developing student-athletes academically and athletically. Jason will fit in well with the culture I am creating within our program and represent the core values of respect, accountability, attitude and discipline that our program is built on.”

A Council Bluffs, Iowa, native, Wichman helped develop some of the finest goalkeepers in Iowa State school history. His coaching of Lindsey Hendon was instrumental in the 2016 campaign, when Hendon set a school-record with 10 shutouts and had a 0.89 goals-against average. In his second season at Iowa State in 2013, Wichman helped guide the Cyclones to one of the best defensive seasons in school history recording seven total shutouts and finishing fourth in the Big 12 with 93 saves.

Prior to ISU, Wichman helped guide Texas State to the 2011 Southland Conference tournament title, a program-record-tying 14 wins and a berth in the NCAA Championship tournament.  The 2011 Bobcats had a streak of 14-straight matches without allowing multiple goals and in the process, recorded nine shutouts. 

Prior to his one season at Texas State, Wichman coached for three years (2008-10) at Drake University. He saw Drake have its first 10-win season in four years in 2010 and a program-record-tying nine shutouts.  Wichman coached Drake goalkeeper Kalena Litch to a program-record nine shutouts during the 2010 campaign.

Wichman has extensive experience training goalkeepers, a role he served at his stops at Texas State, Drake, Simpson College (2006-07), Waukee High School (2007-08) and Iowa City West High School (2006).

Wichman played collegiately for four years and graduated from Simpson College in 2004. He earned his NSCAA National Goalkeeping Diploma and NSCAA National Diploma.

Wichman and his wife Megan have two kids, Finley and Stella. They reside in Olathe, Kan.
