OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – The Johnson County Community College softball team remains on top of the Kansas Jayhawk Division II Conference standings after posting sweeps over Cowley College and Cloud County Community College last week, extending their win streak to nine straight. JCCC is 11-1 in conference play, ahead of Highland at 8-2, Labette at 9-3, Kansas City Kansas and Cowley at 6-4.

The Lady Cavaliers posted two impressive road wins over the Tigers, winning by the scores of 6-1 and 11-2, and was able to stop a four-game losing streak in the series. The followed with two-hard fought wins over last place Cloud County, winning 3-2 and 2-1 in eight innings.

In the first game at Cowley, sophomore Kerrigan Dixon led JCCC to the 6-1 win with her arm and bat. She picked up the complete-game victory allowing just one run off five hits with seven strikeouts. At the plate, she was 2-for-3 with a run driven in.

Sophomore third baseman Alli Heiman had a single and drove in two runs, and sophomore catcher Kerry Murphy, freshman designated player Lenae Salinas and freshman center fielder Emily Fox each had one RBI.

In the second game, a seven-run third inning is all Johnson County needed to get by the Tigers. Murphy was 2-for-3 with a home run and three RBIs. Freshman outfielders Kylie Hays and Ivy Brewer each had a hit and drove in two runs.

Freshman right-hander Kyleigh Lay picked up a complete-game victory. She allowed two run, one earned, off three hits and struck out 10 batters over her five innings in the circle.

In the opening game against Cloud County, Dixon was again masterful in the circle. She allowed just one unearned run and struck out nine to improve her season record to 9-2.

Murphy had two hits, including a solo home run, and Fox had two singles and drove in one run. Sophomore shortstop Manny Johansen also had an RBI-single.

Johnson County needed an extra innings to complete the sweep of Cloud County. Murphy scored the winning run on a wild call at the plate. She was on first when Heiman belted a double. Head coach Aubree Brattin-Volkens waved Murphy home, and the ball got past the catcher. Cloud County pitcher Mattison Hogrefe picked up the ball and tagged Murphy out. However, the umpire awarded her the plate calling the catcher for obstruction and the game was over.

Murphy got JCCC on the board in the sixth inning with an RBI bunt single.

Johnson County will host Iowa Western Community College in a double header Tuesday, April 9 at 1 p.m., before a conference showdown at Highland on Thursday, April 11.
