OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – The No. 9-seeded Johnson County Community College softball team got off to a good start at the 2019 NJCAA Division II National Tournament in Clinton, Miss, yesterday, defeating 8-seed Madison College 6-3. JCCC was one of three teams to down higher seeds in the first round.
The Lady Cavaliers never trailed, plating four runs in the top of the first and two more in the top of the fifth. Madison scored single runs in the first, fifth and sixth innings.
Sophomore third baseman Alli Heiman and sophomore first baseman Jordyn Clough were Johnson County big run producers. Heiman was 2-for-3 with three RBIs. Clough was also 2-for-3 with a sacrifice and two RBIs.
Sophomore Kerrigan Dixon, the starting pitcher, also drove in a run and scored twice, and sophomore second baseman Torey Burkhardt ripped and single and a double and scored a run.
Dixon worked 5.1 innings and notched her 15th win of the season and 30th of her career. She allowed three runs off nine hits and struck out two batters.
Freshman Hallie Henderson pitched the final 1.2 innings. She did not allow a hit and had two strikeouts.
Johnson County will now face No. 1 seed Louisiana State University-Eunice today at 3:30 CST. LSU-Eunice edged NO. 16 seed Hagerstown Community College 3-2 in their opening game.
