JCCC softball continues to advance in region tournament

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – The Johnson County Community College softball team posed a pair of victories in the consolation bracket yesterday to move closer to a chance to compete for the Region 6 Championship Lake Shawnee Softball Complex in Topeka. 

After falling to the consolation bracket on Wednesday, the Lady Cavaliers defeated Allen 6-1 followed by a dramatic 4-2 win over cross-town rival Kansas City Kansas. JCCC will face Neosho County today at noon in another elimination game, with the winner advancing to the championship to face Fort Scott. 

Johnson reached this point in the tournament with a come-from-behind win over Kansas City Kansas. Trailing by two in the top of the third, JCCC tied the game on a two-run error by the Blue Devils. 

The game remined tied until the top of the ninth when sophomore Deja Gardenhire blasted a two-run home run over center field to put the Lady Cavaliers up 4-2.

Sophomore right-hander Maggie McNally pitched one of her better games on the year, allowing two runs off six hits while striking out a season-high 11 batters over nine innings in the circle. 

Johnson County started the day with a 6-2 win over Allen. Sophomore Kate Ediger hit two home runs and drove in three to power the Lady Cavaliers offense. She homered in the second and fifth innings. She also had a single and scored three times. 

Sophomore Gracie Ramsey had a single, a walk and two runs driven in and sophomore Riahn Pinkerton recorded an RBI double in the fourth. 

Freshman Kaelyn Conrad earned the complete-game victory for the Lady Cavaliers. The left-hander gave up two hits, one run over seven innings, striking out three batters.
