All-time Softball Coaches 

Barbara Gill
1979-85 (7 Seasons)

In 1979, Barbara Gill became the first softball coach in Johnson County history, in her inaugural season, she led the team to a 36-15 mark, a Region VI championship and fourth-place finish at the NJCAA National Tournament. Gill would serve as the head coach for seven campaigns, finishing with a 186-114 record. She also guided four teams to Region VI titles and one conference championship.

Individually she coached five NJCAA All-American, including four-team selections. She also mentored one NJCAA Tournament selection and 26 All-Region VI performers. 

Dave Herron

Dave Herron coached one season at Johnson County, leading the Lady Cavaliers to a 22-20 record. He also had two players garner first-team All-Region VI honors. 

Ruth Haney
1987-89 (3 Sesaons)

Ruth Haney served three seasons as head coach at Johnson County, compiling a 57-69 record. In 1987, her first season, Haney led the team to a 24-20 mark and runner-up finish at the Region VI Tournament. Her next two seasons, she guided the team to back-to-back third place finishes in the standings. Individually, she coached one NJCAA All-American and three All-Region VI performers. 

Ron Meinert
1990-96 (7 Seasons)

Ron Meinert began his career at Johnson County as an assistant coach in 1987 and three years later became the fourth coach in the program’s history. It did not take long for Meinert to establish himself and his program as one of the best in the country. In his first season he won a conference title. In year two, Meinert won a school record 51 games, and finished seventh in the country. When he retired in 1996, Meinert had compiled a 309-66 record, an .824 winnings percentage, three top-10 national finishes, including one top-5 finish. All three of his NJCAA Tournament teams topped 50 wins, including a record 54-4 mark in 1994. 

The list of individual honors won at JCCC under Meinert is just as impressive. During his tenure, Meinert coached 23 All-East Jayhawk Conference performers, 41 NJCAA All-Region VI performers, 26 NFCA All-Americans, 11 NJCAA All-American and six national tournament team members. Of the field, nine players garnered NFCA academic honors and three earned all-academic distinction by the NJCAA. In addition, his teams finished among the country’s top-10 academic teams in five of seven seasons, including a national academic championship in 1992. 

Meinert’s hard work and dedication did not go unnoticed. In 1994, he was recognized by his peers as the recipient of the NFCA West Region Coach of the Year after leading his team to a 51-8 record and seventh place national finish. In 2009, Meinert was inducted into the NJCAA Softball Coaches Hall of Fame.

Frank Barnes
1997-2006 (10 Seasons)

Frank Barnes took over the program in 1997, and not only did he maintain the level of success of the program, but elevated to another level. In his first season, Barnes guided JCCC to a program record 55 wins, conference and region titles, and fourth-place finish at the NJCAA National Tournament. He followed with another record-breaking season compiling 59 wins along conference and region titles and fifth-place national finish.  Overall, Barnes coached 10 seasons compiling a mark of 488-134, four conference titles, six Region VI Titles, four Top-10 national finishes with two in the Top-5. His teams topped 40 or more win in nine of his seasons, and reached 50-plus wins four times. 

Individually he produced 18 NJCAA All-Americans, including seven first-team selections. He also 21 NFCA All-Americans, 13 NJCAA Preseason All-Americans, two NJCAA All-Tournament selections, four NJCAA All-Stars, 71 All-Region VI performers, 74 All-East Jayhawk Conference performers, four conference MVPs and three conference freshmen of the year. He also had two players earn Diamond Sports Catcher of the Year and one be selected the runner-up. 

Kelly Latrendresse

A former standout player at Johnson County, Kelly Latrendesse took over the program in 2007 after serving as an assistant coach for the Lady Cavaliers. Over her five seasons, Latrendesse compiled a 198-76 record, won two conference title, placed second twice, won four Region VI/District championships, a ninth-place national finish, two fifth-place national finishes and national runner-up finish in her first season. She averaged 39 wins per season, and topped 40 wins twice with 46 in 2007 and 48 in 2010. 

Individually Latrendresse had five players selected as NJCAA All-Americans and along with four preseason NJCAA All-Americans, 10 NFCA All-Americans, eight NJCAA All-Tournament selections, 26 All-Region VI performers and 26 All-Kansas Jayhawk Conference performers.

As a player for the Lady Cavaliers, Latrendresse was a two-time All-Region VI and All-East Jayhawk Conference performer, along with being selected conference MVP in 2002. Also that season, Latredresse earned first-team NJCAA and NFCA All-American after closing out the season as one of the leading hitters in the country. She hit .516 (98-for-190) with 20 doubles, six triples and 12 home runs. She drove in an amazing 91 runners, shattering the previous school mark of 73. That total ranked second in the nation that season. Latendresse also set the career record for RBI at JCCC with 123.
