Seven Lady Cavalier soccer players to continue careers at 4-year schools

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – Johnson County Community College head women's soccer coach Jim Schwab announced that seven sophomores from his 2019-20 roster have signed with 4-year schools for the 2020-21 season.

Forward Kayla Brashear signed with Kansas Wesleyan University in Salina, Kan. Midfielder Morgan Carranza and defenders Kayla Flores and Cierra Goe will be attending Park University in Parkville, Mo. Midfielder Millie Hopkisson signed with Bellevue University in Bellevue, Neb. Forward Megan Nugent is headed to Avila University in Kansas City, Mo., and midfielder Cielo Rivera signed with Columbia College in Columbia, Mo. 

Brashear was a two-time All-Kansas Jayhawk Conference performer and earned All-Region VI second-team honors this past season. She led the team in scoring as a freshman and sophomore with 27 and 34 points respectively. Brashear closed out her career tied for 21st all-time with 61 points, and 15th all-time in career goals with 26. She also is tied for third all-time with 10 game-winning goals. Seven of those goals came last season, which led the conference and ranked sixth in the NJCAA. 

Carranza, Flores, Goe and Rivera were all key members of the Lady Cavaliers defensive pool last season that allowed only 23 goals and a goals against average of 1.08 with six shutouts.  

Carranza helped out offensively with two goals and two assists for six points in 2019, and accounted for three points in 2018 with one goal and one assist. 

Flores had three assists in 2019 and three goals and an assist in 2018. She also earned All-East Kansas Jayhawk Conference honors both years. She was first-team selection as a freshman, and earned second-team honors last season.

 

Rivera provide a goal and three assists last season, and was a second-team All-East Jayhawk Conference pick. As a freshman in 2017, she scored 11 points off five goals and one assist. Rivera suffered a season-ending injury after playing in the first match of the 2018 season.

 

As a freshman in 2017, Hopkisson earned second-team All-East Jayhawk Conference accolades after finishing second on the team in points with 23 and goals scored with nine. Four of her nine scoring shots were game-winners, which led the team.  She sat out the 2018 season with an injury, then returned for her sophomore season last fall, tallying four goals and five assists for 13 points.

 

Nugent finished with five goals and seven assists for 17 points last fall, and tallied 19 points with six goals and seven assists her freshman campaign.
