JCCC falls to Barton 1-0 in Region Tournament opener

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – For just the second time in program history, the Johnson County women's soccer team was eliminated from the Region VI Tournament in the first round, falling to 1-0 to Barton in Great Bend, Kan. The last time it happed was in 2004 when Dodge City upset the favored Lady Cavaliers 2-1. 

The Cougars Fatima Leme fired a shot past JCCC goalkeeper Oliva Ways in the 74th for the only score of the game.  Barton outshot Johnson County 11-to-8, but the Lady Cavaliers had two more shots than the host Cougars in the first 45 minutes of the match. 

The loss was just the second in eight meetings against the Cougars in postseason play. Johnson County still has a commanding lead in the all-time series at 20-5-1. 

Ways, who was the KJCCC Goalkeeper of the Week the final week of the regular season, saved five of the six shot she faced and ended the season with 56 saves, which was fourth most in the conference. Her .757 save percentage was also fourth. 

Freshman midfielder Darrian Gordon led the team in scoring with eight points and three assists for 19 points. Sophomore and team MVP Gail Logan, sophomore Tio Krizogono and freshman Riley Porter ties for second in goals scored with five. Logan led the team in assists with five to give her 15 point on the season. 

Johnson County finished the year 7-7 overall and was third in the conference standings.
