JCCC lands nine on All-KJCCC Division II Women’s Soccer Team

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – The Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference (KJCCC) announced its 2023 women's soccer awards and Johnson County had nine players named to the All-KJCCC Division II Women's Soccer Team. Eight of the nine were named to the first-team. It is the second time in team history that JCCC has produced nine all-conference performers in one season.  Additionally, Montana Rose-Curry was selected the Defensive Player of the Year for the conference. 

Earning first team were freshman defender Montana-Rose Currey, sophomore defender Willoughby Lam, freshman forward Jenna Knight, sophomore midfielder Sydney Hammett, sophomore forward Alandra Bailey sophomore midfielder Megan Everhart, sophomore forward Maya Wallace and freshman midfielder Sydney Puetz and.  Freshman goalkeeper Maddox Fergus earned second-team recognition.

These nine players helped to lead JCCC to a 18-4-2 record, a share of the conference title and a runner-up finish at the 2023 NJCAA D-II National Championship.

Currey, along with Lam, played a big role in JCCC's success this year.  With their play on the defensive side, they assisted in shutting down opposing offenses. JCCC recorded 13 shutouts and a goals against average of 0.78, which ranked eighth in the NJCAA. Both players also helped out on the offensive end. Currey finished with five goals scored with an assist for 11 points. Lam provided an assist on two scores. 

Knight was the team's top scorer with 10 goals and 31 points. She tied for the team in assists with 11 and game winning goals with three. Twice during the season, she was selected the KJCCC D-II Player of the Week, earning the award in weeks three and nine. She ranked fourth in the conference in goals, tied for the lead in assists and was third in points. 

Hammett finished second on the team in scoring with 27 points with eight goals and 11 assists, tying her with Knight for the most on the team. She had two multiple-assist matches, highlighted by a three assist effort in a 4-0 win over Central on October 25.  Hammett also had two game winning goals. Her biggest came on the national stage, scoring JCCC's only goal in a 1-0 victory over No. 1 seed Phoenix in the semifinals at the NJCAA D-II National Championship. She was named to the all-tournament team. 

Bailey finished the season as the team's third leading scorer with 24 points on eight goals and eight assists. Two of her eight scored proved to be the game winning goal, one of them was against No. 2 seed Northwest Mississippi at the NJCAA D-II National Championship. Baily closed out her career with 14 goals, nine assists for 37 points. 

Everhart was the team's fourth leading scorer with 22 points, and was second in goal scored with nine and game winning goals with two. Her nine goals tied for sixth in the conference. Everhart closed out her career with 19 goals and 14 assists for 52 points. Her 19 goals tie for 19th all-time in program history. She also had seven career game winning goals which ties her for third most in program history. 

Wallace closed out the season ranked fifth on the team with 19 points. She netted six goals and had seven assists. In the seventh week, Wallace was named the conference Player of the Week after scoring five points with a goal and two assists in a 6-0 win against Central and one assist in a 1-1 tie against Neosho County. 

Puetz proved to be a key defensive midfielder for the Lad Cavaliers in 2023, helping the defense to a goals against average of 0.78 with 13 shoutouts. She also helped out on offense with two goals and one assist.

Fergus finished her rookie season with a record of 8-2-0 with seven shutouts and a goals against average of 0.80. She ranked tied for fifth in the conference in wins, tied for first in shutouts and was third in GAA. Nationally she tied for 23rd in wins, tied for seventh in shutouts and ranked 12th in GAA. In team history Fergus' seven shutouts tie for ninth on the season chart and her 0.80 GAA ranks 17th.
