Volleyball goes 3-1 at DMACC Classic

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – The Johnson County Community College volleyball team, now ranked no. 7 in the current NJCAA D-II poll, finished with a 3-1 record at the Des Moines Area Community College Classic last weekend in Boone, Iowa, and now stand 19-5 on the season. 

The Lady Cavaliers won 3-0 over Ellsworth and 3-2 over Waubonsee on Friday afternoon, Oct. 4, and Saturday they downed Metropolitan 3-0 before falling 3-0 to D-III No. 2-ranked Rochester Community and Technical. 

Returning sophomore All-American libero Rylie Barnum had a big weekend. She tallied 95 digs over the four matches, including a career high 41 in the five-set victory over Waubonsee. Her previous career high was 38 set last year at Highland. Barnum now has a career total of 1,182 digs, third-most in team history.  Next on the list is Lexi Hartzog at 1,224. 

Barnum currently ranked fourth in the conference with 439 digs this season, and she is ranked second overall with a digs per set average of 5.49.  

Freshmen Kallie Fenscke and Sierra Norlin and sophomore Ami Dias put up solid numbers while running the offense. Fenscke reached 20 assists in all four matches and finished with 82 in the classic. Dias reached double digits in three matches and finished 38 total assists, and Norlin had 20 assists in the first two matches of the classic. 

Johnson County got key production from several hitters in the lineup. Freshman Brooke Wroten had 29 kills, including a 12-kill effort in the win over Ellsworth.  Sophomore Kayla Niegenfind tallied 39 kills, highlighted by a 16-kill effort against Waubonsee. 

Other key performances were posted by freshman middle hitter Makenzie Griffel (18 kills, 37 digs); freshman middle hitters Taylor Hervey (16 kills, 18 blocks); freshman outside hitter Gracie LaForge (31 kills, 12 digs); freshman outside hitter Kassi Coons (21 kills); and freshman middle hitter Tatum Ernt (13 kills). 

Johnson County will host No. 6-ranked Fort Scott Community College on Wednesday, Oct. 10 at 5:30 p.m. The Lady Greyhounds are 24-4 overall, and tied for second in the conference with JCCC at 5-1.
