Johnson County finishes 3-0 in Florida

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – The no. 7-ranked Johnson County Community College volleyball team traveled to Florida over and weekend, and game away with three wins, and now stand 22-6 overall. 

The Lady Cavaliers opened with a three-set sweep over St. Thomas University on Friday evening, 25-16, 25-14, 25-20. On Saturday, Johnson County needed five sets to defeat host Palm Beach State College, and four sets to down Pasco Hernando State College. 

Against Palm Beach State, the Lady Cavaliers won the first two sets 25-21 and 25-22, but Panthers pulled even with 25-22 and 25-23 wins in sets three and four. Johnson County dominated the fifth set winning 15-5. JCCC defeated Pasco Hernando State 25-12, 21-25, 25-18, 25-19. 

Freshman setter Kallie Fenscke had a big weekend.  She topped double figures in assists in all three matches, highlighted by a season-best 33-assist effort in the win over Pasco Hernando State. She had 18 against St. Thomas and 27 against Palm Beach State. Fenske leads the team with 486 assists for the season. 

Freshman setter Sierra Norllin also put up some impressive assists numbers in Florida. She too reached double digits in all three matches for a total of 62. Against Palm Beach State she tied her season-high with 22 assists. 

Sophomore All-American libero Rylie Barnum continued her move up the all-time dig chart at Johnson County.  She tallied 43 digs over the three matches to up her career total to 1,258, which now ranks her second all-time in team history. The all-time leader is Katie Latenser with 1,391 over the 2005 and 2006 seasons. 

JCCC head coach Jennifer Ei also got solid production from her hitters. Freshman Mikayla Powell led JCCC with 37 kills. She was followed by freshman Gracie LaForge with 29, freshman Brooke Wroten with 27, sophomore Kayla Niegenfind with 26, freshman Taylor Hervey with 25 and freshman Makenzie Griffel with 24. 

Johnson County returns to Kansas Jayhawk Conference play on Wednesday when the travel to Iola, Kan., to face Allen Community College.
