Five volleyball players earn postseason honors

OVERLNAD PARK, Kan. – Five members of the Johnson County Community College volleyball team have been selected for postseason recognition.  Sophomore libero Rylie Barnum and freshman right-side hitter Mikayla Powell both were named as All-Kansas Jayhawk Community College D-II first-team and All-Region VI/District A first-team performers. Barnum was also named the KJCCC D-II Libero of the Year for the second straight season. 

Freshman outside hitter Gracie LaForge earned second-team All-KJCCC D-II and sophomore right-side hitter/setter Kayla Neigenfind and freshman middle hitter Taylor Hervey were named to the All-Region VI/District A second-team. 

Barnum, an All-America second-team pick last year, ranked fourth in the conference and tied for 27th in the NJCAA with 622 digs. Her 622 digs are the fifth-most in a season at JCCC, and her 1,365 career digs are second-most, and rank sixth on the all-time career chart for the KJCCC. Barnum's 5.46 digs-per-set average ranked second in the conference and tied for 17th nationally. She also had a team-best 63 aces, and she ranks fourth all-time at JCCC with 124 career aces. In 2019, Barnum reached double figures in digs in 37 of the 38 matches she played. She topped 20-plus digs 15 time, 30-plus twice and had a career high 41 in a 3-2 win over Waubonsee Oct. 4.  Her 41-dig effort are third-highest single match total in team history.   Twice during the season, Barnum was selected as the KJCCC D-II Defensive Player of the Week, earning the honor in week 1 and 3. 

Powell led the team and ranked 15th in the conference with 348 kills. She averaged 3.88 kills-per-set and hit a team-best .306, which ranked tied for 13th in the KJCCC.  Powell also tallied 77 blocks and 70 digs. The topped double figures in kills in 22 matches, including a season-high 18 in a loss to No. 1-ranked Parkland on September 7. 

LaForge finished the season with 248 kills and a 2.03 kills-per-set average, both third-best on the team. She also recorded 83 digs, 70 blocks, 14 assists and 13 aces. She posted double figures in kills in six matches, highlighted by a 16-killl effort in a sweep at Allen on October 16. 

Neigenfind finished 2019 with 326 kills and a 2.72 kills-per-set average, both second-best on the team. She ranked 16th in total kills in the conference, and 25th in kills-per-set average. Neigenfind also registered 346 digs and a 2.88 digs-per-set average, also both second-best on the squad. She also recorded 40 aces, 27 blocks and 18 assists. Neigenfind reached double figures in kills 19 times, in digs 17 times and had 11 double-double matches of kills and digs.  She had a season-high 16 kills along with a season-high 21 digs in a 3-2 win over Waubonsee October 4. 

Hervey posted 170 kills, a kills-per-set average of 1.40 and an attack percentage of .194. She led the team and the Kansas Jayhawk Conference with 123 block assists and 141 total blocks. Her 1.17 blocks-per-set ranked fourth in the conference.
