JCCC’s hot bats leads to a pair of blowout wins on Saturday

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – Extending their win streak to eight straight games, the No. 12-ranked Johnson County softball team breezed through two more opponents at Meador Park in Springfield, Mo., Saturday afternoon.

The Lady Cavaliers registered with 34 runs off 22 hits, including 15 extra base hits and six homers in a 20-4 win over State Fair and 14-0 win over Missouri State-West Plains. The previous day they scored 31 runs off 30 hits with 17 extra base hits and eight home runs to post two victories. 

In the opening game against State Fair, freshman shortstop Jaylee Jefferson and sophomore first baseman Kate Ediger each drove in four runs. Jefferson belted a two-run home run over the centerfield fence in the second innings and drove in two more with a double in the fourth. She also singled in the game. 

Ediger drove all four of her runs with one swing of the bat, blasting a grand slam in the bottom of the third inning. 

Freshman outfielder Kaia Cordill also homered to right field in the inning, scoring two runs and sophomore outfielder Eve Morris hit a two-run homer to center in the fourth inning.

Johnson County accumulated 15 hits in the game. Jefferson, Ediger, Morris, sophomore outfielder Taryn Burkhardt and sophomore infielder/pitcher Deja Gardenhire each collected multiple his for the Lady Cavaliers. Morris and Cordill also each stole multiple bases. 

Freshman right-hander Jalin Lavers started in the circle and picked up the victory. She allowed just one hits, two walks and three runs while striking out six batters. Gardenhire logged the final two innings allowing a run off two hits with a strikeout. 

In second game, Morris drove in four runs, with a two-run home run, an RBI double and a fielder's choice. 

Freshman third baseman Aspen Burgardt also belted a two-run homer and Ediger collected two singles and a double to drive in a pair of runs. 

Burkhardt, freshman outfielder Kaelyn Conrad, Jefferson and sophomore catcher Hannah Archdekin each drove in one run. 

Sophomore right-hander Maggie McNally earned the shutout for her first victory of the season. She scattered three hits and struck out six over five innings of work.

Johnson County  (9-3) returns to the field on Tuesday, March 5 when the host Southeast in a doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for noon.
