Johnson County selected as NABC Team of the Week

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – The Johnson County Community College men's basketball team, currently ranked eighth in the NJCAA D-II poll, has been selected by the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) as the NJCAA/Two-Year Colleges Team of the Wee for Jan. 28-Feb. 3. The NABC, located in Kansas City, Mo., was founded in 1927 by Forrest "Phog" Allen, the legendary University of Kansas basketball coach. Since its beginning, the NABC has continually worked to further the best interests of the game of basketball as well as the players and coaches who participate in the sport. 

The Cavaliers are coached by Mike Jeffers. He is in his 28th season at the college and 32nd overall. He currently ranks second in the Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference in career wins with 469. He was named the NABC Coach of the Year in 2009 following the team winning a national championship. 

Also earning teams of the week recognition are Baylor University (NCAA Division I), the University of Southern Indiana (NCAA Division II), Westminster College (NCAA Division III), and the University of Pikeville (NAIA). 

Johnson County took sole possession of first place in the Kansas Jayhawk Community College D-II Conference standings after picking up three conference wins last week. The Cavaliers started the week with a 75-67 upset of No. 3 Highland Community College on Monday night, followed by an 86-71 road win at Labette Community College on Wednesday night. They closed out the week with a convincing 76-58 home victory over Hesston College Saturday afternoon. 

The Cavaliers now stand 21-3 overall and 4-0 in conference play.  They host Kansas City Kansas Community College (10-14/2-2) on Wednesday night, Feb. 6, at 7:30 p.m.
