Malterer pours in career high 37 to power Cavaliers to 102-78 win over Allen

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – Johnson County guard Massi Malterer put on a scoring display that has not been seen in 35 years. The sophomore from Madison, Wisconsin poured in a career-high 37 points to power the No. 19-ranked Cavaliers to a 102-78 home victory over Allen Community College Wednesday night. 

Malterer's 37-point effort is most scored in a game since Greg Zuanich put up 37 in a win over Missouri Valley on January 7, 1989. He is also tied for the 16th-best game scoring effort in program history.

Behind Malterer, JCCC came out red-hot in the first half to build a double-digit halftime lead. The Cavaliers shot 59 percent in the half, while holding the Red Devils to just 28 percent.  Malterer scored 22 of his 37 points in the half, going 8-for-11 from the field and 6-of-7 at the free throw line. For the game he was 13-of-17 shooting, including 3-of-4 from beyond the arc, and 8-of-11 at the charity stripe. He also registered seven rebounds, three assists and two steals. 

Sophomore forward Traymond Willis-Shaw also recorded his best performance in a JCCC uniform this season, finishing with 16 points on 6-of-8 shooting, including 3-of-5 from 3-point range and a free throw. 

Sophomore forward Kyler Mann posted his seventh team-leading double-double of the season with 10 points and 10 boards to go along with a team-high seven assists.

Freshman forward Donald Bangham, Jr., nearly recorded his first career double-double finishing with 11 points and nine rebounds. 

Other key contributors were sophomore guard Drake Davison (7 points), freshman forward Brandon Mann (6 points, 4 rebounds), sophomore guard Jordan Nichols (6 points) and freshman guard Mauryon Turner (4 points, 6 rebounds).

The Cavaliers' bench outscored the Red Devils 32-to-6. 

Allen (10-16, 2-8) was led by Randy Crosby with 32 points, followed by David Teele with 18. 

Johnson County (21-5, 7-3) remains in second place in the conference standings, one game back of Kansas City Kansas (17-9, 8-2).

The Cavaliers travel to Fort Scott (19-7, 6-3) on Saturday, February 17 and look to sweep the season series. JCCC defeated the Greyhounds 70-58 on January 24. They return home to host Labette on Wednesday, February 21 at 7:30. The JCCC athletics department will be celebrating its annual student-athlete academic awards night prior to the tip.
