Cavaliers named NABC Team of the Week for second time this season

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – For the second time this season, the Johnson County Community College men's basketball team has been named the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Team of the Week.  The NABC also selected Eastern Illinois  (NCAA D-I), Palm Beach Atlantic (NCAA D-II), Case Western Reserve (NCAA D-III) and Saint Katherine (NAIA) as its final teams of the week for the 2019-20 season. 

In the final two games of NJCAA Hall of Famer Mike Jeffers' career, Johnson County earned a pair of victories over rival Kansas Jayhawk D-II Conference opponents. On Wednesday, Feb. 19, the 20-ranked Cavaliers held Hesston to 34.6 percent shooting in a dominating 89-58 win. They followed that performance by shooting 59 percent overall in a 98-91 victory over cross-town rival Kansas City Kansas on Saturday afternoon, Feb. 22. Johnson County enters the postseason with a 24-6 record and hold the No. 2 seed in the playoffs. 

For the week, sophomore 6-10 center Lukas Milner led the way averaging 21.5 points, 9.5 rebounds and 2.0 blocks. Milner began the week with 10 points, nine rebounds and three blocks in just 16 minutes of action in the win over Hesston. He followed by pouring in a career high 33 points, along with 10 rebounds and two assists in against the Blue Devils. Milner leads all NJCAA D-II players in field goal accuracy at 71.4 percent. 

For his play, Milner was selected the KJCCC Week 15 D-II Men's Basketball Player of the Week. Milner also won the honor in weeks two and seven. 

As the No. 2 seed in the playoffs, Johnson County received a first round bye and will play the winner of No. 3 Highland and No. 6 Hesston on Tuesday, March 3 at JCCC. The winner will advance to the Region VI D-II final on Friday, March 6 at the Hutchinson Sports Arena in Hutchinson, Kan.
