OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – Johnson County guard JaQuaylon Mays has been selected to the NJCAA Men's Division II Basketball All-America team for the 2019-20 season after helping lead the Cavaliers to a 25-7 record. He was a second-team selection and becomes the 18th NJCAA All-American in team history. Earlier this year he was also selected as first-team All-Kansas Jayhawk D-II Conference and first-team All-Region VI, and became just the fourth player in team history to be named league MVP.

Mays led the team in points with 506, scoring average 16.9 points per game, assists 138 and steals 67. He is shot 53 percent from the field and scored in double figures in 27 of the team's 30 games this season. He is also averaging 6.6 rebounds per game.  Mays ranks second in the conference both total points and points per game. He also ranked second in free throws made (100), total assists (138), assists average, and led the league in steals.  Mays was selected the conference player of week six times during the season, the most of any player.

"Q's rise from not playing at all to start his career to All-American is amazing," said JCCC Hall of Fame head coach Mike Jeffers. "Preserverence, preperation and foremost opportunity collided at the same time. It is even more remarkable what he did this year playing out of position. A natural scoring guard, and he played the point guard postion this year."

For his career, Mays scored 769 points for an average of 12.2 per game. He also tallied 302 rebounds (4.8) 198 assists (3.1), 112 steals (1.8) and shot 40.1 percent from 3-point range which ranks 14th all-time at JCCC.

Mays helped the program to a two-year mark of 56-12 (.824), a conference and region championship, a conference and region runner-up finish and a second-place finish at the NJCAA D-II National Tournament.

The sophomore from Lincoln, Neb., committed to Missouri Western State University last month. Mays will have two years of eligibility left and will join a Griffon team that went 18-14 this past season, and finished fourth in the MIAA with a 13-6 league mark.
