Whitehead and Williams lead Cavaliers to 11th straight victory

OVERLNAD PARK, Kan. – Jaland Whitehead continues to put up impressive numbers for Johnson County head coach Rand Chappell.  The sophomore forward posted his team-leading eighth double-double Wednesday, leading the third-ranked Cavaliers to an 88-76 road victory over Fort Scott.

Whitehead was 10-of-11 shooting, with a 3-pointer and a free throw, to finish with 22 points. He also grabbed 14 boards along with two blocked shots and two assists.  Whitehead leads the conference and ranks fifth in NJCAA D-II basketball with his 12.3 rebounds-per-game average. 

Freshman guard Desi Williams also had a top shooting night, hitting 8-of-15 attempts. He was also 4-for-4 at the line, tying Whitehead for top scoring honors with20 points. He also dished out five assists and collected three steals. 

Sophomore guard Jaycson Bereal, this week's KJCCC D-II Player of the Week, and freshman forward Xavier Kahube also finished in double figures.  Bereal poured in 14 points and grabbed nine rebounds. Kahube, the conference leader in field goal percentage at 66.3, added 10 points. 

As a team, the Cavaliers shot 58 percent from the field, while holding the Greyhounds to just 34 percent.  JCCC is ranked ninth in the country in field goal accuracy, hitting 49 percent of their shots through 12 games. 

With the victory, Johnson County improves to 11-1 on the season and 2-0 in conference play.  JCCC's 11-1 mark ties Chappell with Jeff Simons for best start to a coaching career in team history.  Simon's 1973-74 team opened 11-1, and finished the season 28-3. 

The Cavaliers will look to extend their winning streak to 12 straight on Saturday, March 6 against Hesston (6-6, 0-2).
