JCCC men’s basketball sets mark for best start in program history

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – Johnson County head men's basketball coach Rand Chappell and his Cavaliers set a new program record with their 13 straight victory to open the season last night, defeating Tabor JV 104-66 at JCCC Gymnasium.  JCCC started the season 12-0 in 1974-75, 1987-88 and 2015-16. 

Freshman forward Xavier Kahube led the way with 17 points on 8-of-11 shooting. He also posted five rebounds and a team-high five assists. This was the fifth time this season he posted double figures and second time he was the team's leading scorer. 

Sophomore forward Jaland Whitehead and freshman guard Tymer Jackson each posted a double-double. Whitehead finished with 16 points and 10 rebounds for his ninth double-double of the season and 22 of his JCCC career. 

Jackson double-double is the first of his career. He finished with 14 points and 10 rebounds.

Savonni Love was the fourth player for the Cavalier to post double digits. He was perfect on the night hitting all four field goal attempts and both of his free throws to finish with 10 points. He also posted five rebounds, three steals and two assists. 

Other key efforts were turned in by Kory Jones (8 points, 3 steals, 2 assists); Seth Chargois (7 points, 4 rebounds, 2 steals, 2 assists); Bing Haung (7 points); Damond Daniels (6 points, 5 rebounds, 3 assists); Tully Thomsen (6 points, 4 rebounds) and Peyton Downing (6 points, 4 rebounds, 2 assists). 

The Cavaliers have two games remaining before entering the winter break. They host Link Year Prep on Wednesday, December 8 at 7:30 p.m., and travel to Beatrice, Neb., to take on Southeast on Saturday, December 11.
