Men’s basketball posts a pair of impressive wins to open 2023 season

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – The No. 11-rannked Johnson County Community College men's basketball team opened its 2023-24 season on the road at the North Central Missouri Classic over the weekend, and came away with two impressive victories. 

They opened with a 91-82 win over North Arkansas College on Friday, then capped the weekend with a 77-59 win over North Central Missouri College on Saturday. 

Forward Kyler Mann and guard Masi Malterer got their sophomore seasons off to a strong start. Mann posted a pair of double-doubles, finishing with 21 points and 13 rebounds against North Arkansas and 21 points and 12 rebounds against North Central Missouri. Mann also collected six assists, five steals and two blocks over the weekend.

Malterer poured in a career high 30 points in the opener, hitting 11-of-18 shots. He made both of his 3-point attempts and was a perfect 6-for-6 at the free throw line. He followed with 18 points on 8-of-11 shooting and made 2-of-3 free throws 

Brandon Mann, Kyler's younger brother, also was impressive in his collegiate debut. He averaged 12.5 points, 11.5 rebounds and shot over 52 percent from the field. 

The Cavaliers next four games are at home beginning with Metropolitan Community College on Tuesday, November 7 at 7:30 p.m., followed by Iowa Lakes Community College Friday, November 10, Ottawa University JV Saturday, November 11, and Southeast Community College Tuesday, November 14.
