Cavaliers improve to 3-0 with 74-58 win over Metropolitan

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – The No. 11-ranked Johnson County men's basketball team improved to 3-0 on the season with a 74-58 victory over cross-town rival Metropolitan Community College Tuesday at JCCC Gymnasium. The Cavaliers held a slim one-point lead at the break but dominated the second half to pull away for the 16-point victory. 

Sophomore guard Massi Malterer continued his hot play early into the season, leading the Cavaliers with 21 points on 9-of-13 shooting.  He was also 3-for-3 at the free throw line. Three games into the season, Malterer is averaging 23 points and shooting 67 percent from the field. 

Sophomore forward Kyler Mann, the KJCCC D-II Player of the Week for week one, posted his third consecutive double-double finishing with 10 points and 11 rebounds. He also had a team-high five steals.

Also in double figures with 12 points was freshman guard Brandon Mann. He was 5-of-7 shooting with two free throws. 

Other key players were Elijah Cole (9 pts., 4 reb., 4 ast.), Donald Bangham, Jr. (7 pts, 4 reb., 4 stls.) Jordan Nichols (6 pts., 3 reb.) and Drake Davison (6 pts.) 

Johnson County returns to the hardwood on Friday night when they host Iowa Lakes in a 7 p.m. tip, followed by a 6 p.m. tip Saturday night against Ottawa JV.
