Cavaliers improve to 5-0 with a pair of wins over the weekend

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – The No. 11-ranked Johnson County men's basketball team upped their season mark to 5-0 with a narrow one-point victory over No. 10 Iowa Lakes followed by a blow out over Ottawa JV over the weekend at JCCC Gymnsium.

Freshman forward Brandon Mann scored on a layup with 46 second left to play, giving the Cavaliers what would be a 67-66 victory. That put Mann into double figures with 11 points. 

Sophomore guard Massi Malterer led Johnson County with 17 points on 7-of-17 shooting. He was a perfect 3-for-3 at the free throw line. He also grabbed four rebounds. 

Also in double figures were freshman guard Donald Bangham, Jr., with 11 points and sophomore forward Traymond Willis-Shaw with 10.

On Saturday Johnson County came out strong, building a 22-point lead at the break then dominated the second half, outscoring Ottawa 70-28 for a 126-62 victory. 

Six Cavaliers finished in double figures led by Bangham, Jr. with 21. He was 9-of-11 shooting with a 3-pointer and two free throws.  He also had six rebounds, four assists and three steals. 

Freshman forward Traeger Rader posted a memorable performance, making all nine shots including a 3-pointer for 19 points. He also recorded his first double-double of his college career hauling down a team-high 11 rebounds. 

Sophomore forward Kyler Mann also had a hot hand, hitting 9-of-13 shots to pour in 19 points. He also tallied seven rebounds and five steals.

Also posting double digits were Malterer (16 points, 4 rebounds); freshman guard Mauryon Turner (13 points, 4 assists) and Willis-Shaw (10 points, 6 rebounds, 4 assists). 

Johnson County will hit the hard wood against on Tuesday, November 14, when they host Southeast Community College. They travel to Highland, Kansas this weekend and will face Arkansas State Mid-South on Friday and OnPoint Academy Saturday.
