JCCC baseball continues domination over Highland

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – The No. 9-ranked Johnson County baseball team completed the series sweep over Highland by steamrolling the Scotties 6-0 and 14-0 on Saturday afternoon. With the two wins, JCCC extended its win streak over Highland to 40 straight games.

Sophomore catcher Cal Kilgore was a one-man wrecking crew in the final two games, going 5-7, with a double, three home runs, two walks, three runs scored and nine driven in.  In the opener, Kigore belted a pair of two-run homers, one in the third and one in the fifth. In the final game, he ripped a two-run double in the sixth and had a three-run blast to right field in the seventh to pace the offense. 

In the opening game, sophomore first baseman/DH Dagen Brewer and freshman right fielder Miken Miller each drove in a run.

Sophomore right-hander Maddox Burkitt earned the win for the Cavaliers. He allowed three hits and no runs over five innings, striking out five baters. Sophomore right-hander John Chambers tossed two innings of scoreless ball in relief. He gave two hits and struck five. 

In the finale, Johnson County tallied 14 hits in the game. Brewer, sophomore second baseman Jack Mosh, and freshman right fielder Ryker Edwards each collected multiple hits for the Cavaliers.  Brewer also drove in three runs, and Mosh, Edwards, freshman left fielder Jake McClure, sophomore third baseman Jordan Black and sophomore center fielder Jesse Tisdell each accounted for one RBI. 

Josiah Golden tossed six strong innings to improve his season record to 6-0.  The freshman right-hander scattered four hits, walked one and struck out seven batters. Sophomore right-hander Brody Bunting was masterful in his one inning of relief, striking out the side on nine pitches.

Johnson County (29-7, 11-1) will face Coffeyville this week in another conference tilt. The first twin-bill will be in Coffeyville on Thursday, April 4, and will conclude the series on Saturday, April 6 at JCCC.
