Cavaliers take final two games at Allen to win series

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – The No. 3-ranked Johnson County baseball team posted a pair of double-digit victories at Allen to win the season series 3-to-1 on Saturday in Iola.  The Cavaliers opened the day with 15-4 victory followed a 16-6 win, upping their records to 36-8 overall and 18-2 in conference play. 

Sophomore catcher Cal Kilgore continued to swing a hot bat, going 6-for-9 on the day with three doubles and six RBI, while extending his hitting streak 15 games. In the first game he had three hits, with two doubles, three runs and four RBI, and followed with three more hits, including double, one run and two driven in. 

Also collecting three hits in the opener wore left fielder Jake McClure and second baseman Jack Mosh. McClure scored a run and drove in one. Mosh also walked twice, scored three times, and drove in two runs. 

Center fielder Jesse Tisdell had a single and drove in three runs, and right fielder Ryker Edwards and third baseman Jordan Black each drove in two runs. 

Right-hander Sam Novotny earned the win for JCCC allowing three runs off five hits with three strikeouts over 4 and two-thirds innings. Right-hander Brody Bunting logged the final 2 and one-third inning allowing one run, two hits with four strikeouts. 

Along with Kilgore, Edwards had a big game belting two home runs to drive in three for the Cavaliers in the second game. He hit a solo shot in the fourth and two-run blast in the eighth. 

McClure and Tisdell also went yard in the game. McClure hit a solo home run in the first and Tisdell's bomb cane in the eighth. 

The Cavaliers amassed 18 his in the game, Edwards, McClure and Kilgore each collected three hits, with Black and right fielder Mikan Miller each with two hits. Tisdell, Edwards and catcher Kyle Hepburn each drove in three runs. 

On the bump, right-hander Josiah Golden got the start and allowed eight hits and four runs over four and two-thirds innings, striking out nine batters.  Right-hander Maddox Burkitt followed in relief to pick up the win, allowing just two hits and no runs with four strikeouts over two and one third innings. Right-hander Austin Berggren pitched the final inning, giving up two runs off three hits.

Johnson County returns to conference play on Thursday when they travel to Parsons, Kan., to take on the Labette Cardinals.
