Cavaliers complete sweep of Labette to reach 40 wins on the season

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – The No. 3-ranked Johnson County baseball team competed a four-game series sweep over Labette on Saturday afternoon, winning 14-4 and 11-0. The opened the series on Thursday with wins over 11-1 and 11-2.  Johnson County has scored in double figures in seven straight games and eight of the last nine. 

In the opener, the top two hitters in the lineup, Jake McClure and Maddux Fleck, did their jobs to get on base. McClure collected four hits in four at bats and scored four times. Fleck had two hits, walked and score three times. 

Jack Mosh went 3-for-4 and picked up four RBI, and Dagen Brewer and Cal Kilgore each drove in two runs. 

Overall, the Cavaliers collected 17 hits in the game.

On the hill Sam Novotny earned the win for the Cavaliers. The right-hander gave up five hits and four runs over four innings while striking out four. Brody Bunting threw one inning of shutout ball in relief. 

In the second game Johnson County got off to a fast start plating four runs in the bottom fo the first and put the game away with five in the bottom of the fifth.

McClure against was solid at the top of the order going 2-for-4 with three RBI. Brewer, Ryker Edwards and Jordan Black each picked up two RBI to place the Cavaliers offense. 

Right-hander Josiah Golden earned the victory for JCCC. He allowed four hits and no runs with two strikeouts over four innings of work. Right-hand reliever John Chambers followed with two shutout innings to close the game.

Johnson County (40-8,22-2) opens a key four-game home-and-home series against No. 15 Cowley (34-13,22-2) on Thursday with first place in the conference race on the line.  Both teams currently stand 22-2 in conference play, two games ahead of Kansas City Kansas (20-4). The series opens at JCCC on Thursday, April 25 with the first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m. They teams close out the series on Saturday in Arkansas City.
