JCCC Soccer Field

In 2020, Johnson County Community College Athletics unveiled one of the top soccer facilities in the Midwest.

This new state-of-the-art facility provides JCCC men’s and women’s soccer one of the top playing surfaces in the Kansas Jayhawk Conference and provides the team opportunities to practice and compete in all type weather conditions, as well as host top-notch amateur soccer championships during the year.

A state-of-the-art Sportsturf brand “Gamechanger” was installed on the entire playing surface, making Johnson County the only college soccer program in the state with a full turf.

The new facility includes a press box, seating, and a Musco brand LED lighting system. Also included are a concession stand and bathroom.

The new soccer complex replaced the natural grass field that was constructed in 1995 on the East side of campus. Prior to 1995, the men’s team played on a smaller all grass field the same spot as the new field.

During those first 19 seasons in program history, the JCCC men’s soccer team won eight Region 6 championships (1977, 1982, 1983, 1984, 1987, 1991, 1993, 1994) and finished runner-up seven times. The 1994 season, their final on the lower field, saw the Cavaliers win a District Championship and advance to the NJCAA National Tournament for the first time in program history.

The first player to awarded NJCAA All-American came after the 1977 season, when John Layman earned honorable mention honors. A total of 11 All-America certificated were awarded during over 19 seasons, highlighted by one of the best seasons in program by Shawn Beyer. A 1993 second-team All-American, Beyer set season records for points with 60 and goals with 24. He also became the first and still only player in team history reach 100 points for a career.

In 1995, JCCC built a new soccer facility on the upper East side of campus. Since the field's inaugural season in 1995, six more players on the men's side earned All-American.

The new field also witnessed three of the greatest postseason victories in men's soccer history. In 2000, the Cavaliers edged Cloud County, 2-1 in three overtimes, to win the Region VI title. A year later, JCCC defeated East Central in the District Championship, 3-0, and advanced to its second NJCAA National Tournament. In that game, Jimmy Perez netted the fastest goal in the new stadium, firing a shot past the goalkeeper just 51 seconds into the contest. That team went on to finish third nationally. In 2004, JCCC defeated East Central again to win a District title and advance to nationals, winning 2-0. The Cavaliers finished the season fifth in the country.

After COVID delayed the inaugural season on the new facility to the spring of 2021. In 2022, Alan Lopez became the first player to be awarded All-American while playing in the new stadium. He was selected first-team by both the NJCAA and United Soccer Coaches. He became the first player in team history to be selected the USC Scholar Athlete of the Year and College Sports Communicators (CSC) Academic All-America® At-Large Team.

The women's program has been nearly unbeatable at home, winning 84 percent of its matches in the program's 26-year history (194-33-13). Great defense and goaltending have been trademarks of JCCC teams. The Lady Cavaliers have recorded 271 shutouts, 139 at home. One of their largest shutouts came in first round of the Region VI playoffs in 2006. JCCC defeated Cloud County 19-0 behind a record setting scoring performance by All-American Danielle Blevins. She tied a national record with eight goals scored. She also had four assists to give her 20 points total. The Lady Cavaliers have produced many memorable victories in team history, but the greatest came in the 2009 season. Johnson County won its first District title on the field, defeating North Idaho, 3-0. The Lady Cavaliers went on to finish second in the nation.
