In 29 years directing the Johnson County men’s basketball program, Mike Jeffers compiled an impressive list of accomplishments, including the 2001 and 2009 NJCAA National Championships, a national runner-up finish in 2019, nine Region VI Tournament titles, three KJCCC D-II titles, one NABC National Coach of the Year award, two NJCAA D-II National Coach of the Year awards, two National Coach of the Tournament awards, two KABC Coach of the Year awards, three NJCAA District Coach of the Year awards, nine Region VI Coach of the Year awards and two East Jayhawk Conference Coach of Year selections. In 2020, his final season, Jeffers was inducted into the NJCAA Men’s Basketball Hall of Fame.

Jeffers posted a career mark of 499-390 (.561) at JCCC, making him the all-time wins leader the program’s history.  Overall his record is 583-433 (.574) overall, which includes a four-year stint at Brewton-Parker College in Mt. Vernon, Ga.

Jeffers finished his career as one of the most successful coaches in Kansas Jayhawk Conference history. His 499 victories rank second all-time, trailing only Coffeyville’s Jay Herkelman with 660 wins. In 2016-17, Jeffers surpassed Randy Smithson who 404 wins with stints at Butler and Cowley. He ranks fourth among Region VI coaches behind Herkelman (634), former Brown Mackie coach Francis Flax (608), former Cloud County coach Dennis Erkenbrack (502).

Individually, players excelled under Jeffers leadership. Fourteen Cavaliers (Jimmy Hubbard, Chris Lollar, Caleb Kennedy, Chad Fleming, Todd McCoy, Aaron Linn, Nafis Ricks, Ronnie Boggs, Quasim Jones, Pat Jones, Danzel Wright, Anthony Lupardus,  Nick Larkin and JaQuaylon Mays) earned 16 total NJCAA All-America honors. Lollar was the NJCAA Player of the Year in 2001, and Ricks was selected the NJCAA Player of the Year and NABC Junior College Player of the Year in 2009.

Also during his tenure as the Cavaliers coach, 57 of his players have been selected as All-East Jayhawk Conference performers, 60 All-Region VI selections, 10 national All-Tournament performers, two Jack Custriano Best Small Man Award, two National Tournament MVPs, two Kansas Jayhawk Conference Freshman of the Year, one Kansas Jayhawk Conference Defensive Player of the Year, and four Kansas Jayhawk Conference MVPs.

Even more impressive is Jeffers’ ability to take young talent and develop their skills, allowing them to grow as a player and eventually play at the next level. Since arriving at JCCC in 1991, Jeffers has had 74 players sign upper division scholarships to continue their careers. One of those players is Aaron Linn, who went on to play at Gardner-Webb University. In the 2008-09 season, Linn helped his team defeat Kentucky with 15 points, eight rebounds and three assists to earn Regional MVP of the 2K Sports College Hoops Classic. Later, he was named to the prestigious ESPN the Magazine Academic All-America First-Team, becoming the first men’s basketball player from GWU to earn that distinction.

A 2011 inductee into the JCCC Athletics Hall of Fame, Jeffers has led Johnson County to five NJCAA Tournament appearances and captured national titles twice, making him the only Kansas Jayhawk Conference men's basketball coach to win multiple national championships. In his 29 years at Johnson County, Jeffers has led the men’s basketball program to 11 20-win campaigns, including a school record 31wins in 2018-19, 30 wins in 2000-01 and the fifth-best season with 26 wins in 2008-09 and 2016-17. The 2000-01 and 2008-09 seasons ended with Jeffers’ teams cutting down the nets as national champions. The 2018-19 team won a record 31 games on their way to a national runnner-up finish. He also has won nine Region VI championships and had his team appear in the region title game 15 times.
