Johnson County sweeps Coffeyville to keep top spot in conference race

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – The No. 7-ranked Johnson County baseball team earned its seventh series sweep of the season taking all four games against Coffeyville. The Cavaliers won the first two games on the road 7-1 and 5-3, and closed out the series at home winning 8-7 and 26-8. Johnson County now stands 33-7 overall, and 15-1 in conference play. 

Johnson County held slim 3-1 lead going into the top of the seventh, but the Cavaliers plated four runs to secure the win. 

Sophomore outfielder Jesse Tisdell singled in two runs, sophomore catcher Kyle Hepburn single home a run and freshman first baseman drove in a run with a sacrifice fly. 

Freshman shortstop Maddux Fleck and sophomore third baseman Jordan Black each had two hits and an RBI. 

Sophomore right-hander Ryan Borberg earned the victory for the Cavaliers improving to 6-0 on the year. He allowed just four hits and one run over five innings, striking out seven batters. Sophomore right-hander John Chambers tossed two innings of shutout ball to pick up his second save on the season. He did not allow a hit and struck out three. 

In the second game the Cavaliers found themselves down 3-1 entering the seventh inning, but JCCC tallied three runs to take the lead then added an insurance run in the eighth to clinch the 5-3 win. 

Freshman left fielder Jake McClure had three hits, including a double, and drove in a run. Hepburn belted a double and triple and had one RBI. Freshman right fielder Ryker Edwards singled in two runs and Black had two hits and run scored.

Freshman right-hander Brandon Stone earned the victory, upping his season record to 8-0. He allowed eight hits but just two runs over six and one-third innings, striking out seven batters.  Sophomore right-hander Austin Berggren pitched the final 2.2 innings to earn the save. 

Now back in Overland Park for the final two games, freshman right fielder Miken Miller had a hot bat to start his day. He had a double and two singles to drive in five runs in the game. He doubled in two runs in the first, had an RBI single in the third and singled and drove in two in the fourth. 

Sophomore second baseman Jack Mosh and freshman first baseman Easton Roe each belted a solo home run and Kilgore earned an RBI with a sacrifice fly. 

Chambers pitched the final three innings to earn the victory. He allowed one run off two hits with five strikeouts. 

In the final game Johnson County got off to a hot start scoring 10 runs in the bottom of the first inning. The Ravens cut into that lead with four in the third, but JCCC responded with six in their half the inning for a 16-4 advantage. The Cavaliers added three more in the fifth and seven in the sixth to post the 26-8 win.   

Black and Hepburn had the hot bats for the Cavaliers. Black was 4-for-6 with a double, home run, three runs scored and a career-high six driven in. His home run was a three-run shot in the fifth inning. Hepburn had two doubles, a single, four runs scored and four RBI.

Mosh drove in four runs, three on a shot over the left field fence in JCCC's 10-run first inning. Freshman infielder/outfielder Drew Veatch had two hits and an RBI, Kilgore had a two-run single and Roe singled, walked twice, scored three and drove in two. 

Also picking up solo RBIs sere Miller, Edwards, freshman catcher/first baseman Tyler Buchman and freshman infielder Patrick Bergkamp.

Freshman right-hander Josiah Golden began the game for the Cavaliers. The starting pitcher surrendered three hits and five runs, four earned, over three and two-thirds innings, striking out four to improve to 7-0. Sophomore right-hander Brody Bunting pitched two and one-third innings of no-run ball for JCCC in relief. He gave up no hits and struck out five. 

Johnson County continues conference play with a four-game home-and-home series with Allen beginning on Thursday, April 11 at JCCC. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
