Johnson County earns a split at Iowa Western

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – The Johnson County Community College softball team took a break from Kansas Jayhawk Conference play, traveling to Council Bluffs, Iowa for a double-header against Iowa Western Community College. The Lady Cavaliers lost the first game 4-0, but earned a split with a 4-3 victory in extra innings. 

In the opener, Iowa Western held JCCC's bat in check, allowing just three hits, two coming from freshman shortstop Manny Johansen

Sophomore right-hander Kerrigan Dixon took the loss, falling to 9-5 on the season. She allowed four runs, two earned with four strikeouts. 

In the second game, Johnson County jumped out early plating three runs in the top of the first inning, but that would be their only offense until scoring the eventual winning run in the top of the eighth inning. 

Sophomore designated player Kelsy Orender had two hits, including a double, and drove in two runs. 

Freshman catcher Lenae Salinas had two hits and scored twice, and freshman center fielder Megan Weigel and sophomore first baseman Jordyn Clough each had an RBI single. 

Freshman right-hander Hallie Henderson pitched all eight innings and improved to 5-3 overall. She allowed three runs, two earned and struck seven batters. 

Johnson County (15-8/11-1) travels to Highland, Kan., Thursday, April 11 for a two-game conference tilt with Highland Community College (19-9/8-4).  They return home to host Kansas City Kansas Community College (27-13/8-4) on Saturday, April 13 at noon.
