JCCC Softball breaks even on St. Louis trip

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – The Johnson County softball team traveled to St. Louis over the weekend for a pair of doubleheaders against St. Louis and St. Charles. The Lady Cavaliers came away 2-2, losing both games to the Archers on Saturday, 8-1 and 11-9, followed by a sweep over St. Charles, 8-3 and 11-0.

In the opener at St. Louis, JCCC leadoff hitter Taryn Burkhardt singled to start the game and scored off an RBI by Hannah Archdekin, but that would be all the offense produced the remainder of the game. 

Right-hander Jordan Harrison suffered her first loss of the season, allowing eight runs off 10 hits with six strikeouts.

In the second game, JCCC got their bats going as six players produced multiple hits with the team collected 15 total hits, including home runs by Kate Ediger and Maddy Morrison.  In addition to their homers, Ediger also had a single, scored and drove in two. Morrison added two singles for a three-hit day, scored twice and drove in two.

Shortstop Toree Hoobler went 2-for-4 and drove in three run. DP Deja Gardenhire had two singles and scored two runs. Right fielder Grace Ramsey belted double and a single, scored and drove in a run, center fielder Eve Morris went 2-for-3 and Burkhardt had a single, three walks, scored twice and drove in a run. 

St. Louis trailed 5-3 entering the bottom of the fourth, but the Archers platted eight runs to take control of the game. 

Maggie McNally took the loss, allowing nine runs, seven earned, over three innings. Gardenhire logged the final three innings, allowing two runs off three hits. 

In the opener at St. Charles, Johnson County jumped out to an early lead, scoring three in the first, and built their lead to 7-0 after five innings.

Archdekin was 3-for-3 with a double and three runs scored. Harrison had two singles, a walk and drove in three. Outfielder Eve Morris and catcher Gaige Pinkerton each had two hits and two RBI and Burkhardt had three singles and scored a run.

Harrison bounced back with a strong effort in the circle. She allowed just one earned run off four hits and struck out 10 batters to up her season mark to 8-1.

In the final game, Hoobler and Pinkerton had big days at the plate. Booker had a triple and a single to drive in five runs, and Pinkerton collected a double and a single plating four runs. 

Second baseman Emma Smith had a triple, singles and scored three times. Burkardt singled, walked three times and came across four time, and Ediger picked up two hits, including a double, and drove in a run. 

McNally also rebounded to post a solid effort, allowing just two hits with six strikeouts in her five innings of work.   

Johnson County will stay on the road for a doubleheader at Cloud County on Thursday, April 6, then return home to host Fort Scott on Tuesday, April 11.
