10th-ranked Johnson County softball team sweeps Southeast

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. -  On a day that the Johnson County softball team moved up two spots in the NJCAA D-II rankings to No. 10, the Lady Cavaliers recorded a series sweep over Southeast winning 6-4 and 13-4 at the JCCC Softball Complex Tuesday afternoon. 

In the opener, Johnson County began the scoring in the bottom of the first inning with RBI doubles off the bats of center fielder Eve Morris and first baseman Kate Ediger

The Lady Cavaliers extended their early lead with three runs in the bottom of the second to make it 5-0. With two outs, Gracie Ramsey singled to left and came around to score on a single by Taryn Burkhard to right field then cleared the bases after an error by the Bobcats' right fielder. 

Shortstop Jaylee Jefferson, this week's KJCCC D-II Player of the Week, doubled scored off a Morris single. Third baseman Aspen Burgardt then doubled her home for the third run of the inning. 

Southeast pulled to within two runs in the top of the fifth innings a three-spot, but Ediger blasted a solo home run over left field to ice the game. 

Right-hander Mariah Unverzagt, the KJCCC D-II Pitcher of the Week, started in the circle and earned the victory, improving to 4-0 on the year. She gave up seven hits and three runs over four and two-thirds innings, strikeout one and walking one.  Left-hander Kaelyn Conrad threw two and one-third innings of shutout ball in relief. She scattered two hits and struck out five batters to earn her first save. 

Morris, Burkhardt and Ediger each collected two hits for JCCC, and Morris and Ediger each drove in two runs. 

Johnson County completed the series sweep off the hot hitting of Bugardt, who matched her season high of five RBI off two hits.  She blasted a grand slam over the center field fence in the first inning, and doubled and ripped an RBI double in the third inning.  She leads the team through 14 games with six home runs and 23 RBI. 

Johnson County scored nine runs in the first inning to seal the victory early. In addition to Burghardt's slam, second baseman Izzy Carter doubled, scoring two runs and Jefferson belted a three-run homer over the right field fence. 

JCCC added two more runs in the third off an RBI double from Bugardt and RBI single by Ediger. 

Johnson County collected 14 hits in the game. Ediger was 3-for-3 at the plate to lead the Lady Cavaliers in hits. She leads the team with nine multiple hit games. Morris and third baseman Riahn Pinkerton each collected multiple hits. As a steam this season, the Lady Cavaliers are hitting a .417 clip, currently sixth-best in the country. 

Jalin Lavers picked up the complete game victory, her second of the season. The right-hander allowed. Four hits and four runs, two earned, over five innings, strikeout out six and walking five.

Johnson County (11-3) returns to the field on Sunday, March 10, hosting a twin bill against Indian Hills (9-7). First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
