JCCC Softball sweeps Kirkwood to improve to 17-5 on season

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – The No 10-ranked Johnson County softball team swept Kirkwood on Saturday to up their season mark to 17-5. The Lady Cavaliers won the first game in dramatic fashion with a 10-9 walk-off fashion followed by an 8-1 win. 

In the opener, Johnson County came back to win despite trailing 8-1 in the bottom of the fifth inning. The Lady Cavaliers scored five runs in the fifth, three in the sixth and game winning run in the seventh. 

Freshman second baseman Izzy Carter ripped three doubles, scored twice and drove in three runs.

Freshman shortstop Jaylee Jefferson had a single and double, scored twice and drove in two, and freshman third baseman Aspen Burgardt single and belted a two-run homer. Sophomore center fielder Eve Morris and sophomore catcher Riahn Pinkerton also drove in a run.

Freshman right-hander Mariah Unverzagt picked up the victory in relief, improving to 5-0. 

In the opener the top of the order did most of the damage for JCCC, in the second game it was their bottom portion that helped the Lady Cavaliers to an 8-1 victory.

Morris, Pinkerton, freshman DP Haley Bryant and sophomore left fielder Gracie Ramsey combined for seven hits, six runs and four RBI. Both of Morris' and Bryant's hits were doubles. Pinkerton singled and doubled.

Sophomore leadoff hitter and left fielder Taryn Burkhardt also had a big game, finishing 2-for-3, with a triple, a run and three driven in.

Unverzagt earned the complete-game victory and now stands a perfect 6-0 on the season. He surrendered seven hits and one run over seven innings, striking out three and walking one. 

Johnson County will return between the lines on Thursday, March 21 when they host Northern Oklahoma-Enid in a twin-bill beginning at 2 p.m.
