Johnson County softball sweeps Indian hills in home opener

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – The Johnson County softball team swept Indian Hils in its home opener Friday afternoon. The Cavaliers rallied for a 10-8 victor in the opening game, then raced to a 12-4 victory in a five-inning shortened win.

Trailing 4-1 entering the bottom of the fourth innings, Johnson County a pair of three-run blasts from freshman catcher Maddie Murray and freshman outfielder Janelle Lang to put the Cavaliers up for good 7-4.

The Warriors scored a one in the top of the fifth, but JCCC answered back with a two run homer from freshman utility player Lily Hans.

Down five runs in the top of the seventh, Indian Hills managed to pull within two off a three-run home run by Mary-Paige Withers, but freshman right-hander Elsa Carrillo got the final two outs to close out game.

Jalin Lavers started in the circle for Johnson County. The sophomore right-hander gave up nine hits, eight runs, seven earned over six and one-third innings, strikeout six batters to even her record at 2-2.

In the second game, Johnson County put the game away early, plating all 12 runs in the bottom half of the second inning.

Sophomore infielder Jaylee Jefferson ripped a two-run triple and a two-run double in the inning.  Hans recorded three doubles and drove in three runs. Freshman outfielder Spencer Habig drove in two and freshman infielder Reagan Neitzel and sophomore infielder Izzy Carter each had one RBI.

Sophomore right-hander Brielle Dee eared the complete-game victory, improving to 3-2 on the season. She allowed seven hits and four runs over five innings, striking out two batters.

Johnson County (5-6) will play six games over three days begging with single games against Kirkwood and McCook on Friday, March 7 followed by single games against Bryant & Stratton and North Iowa Area on Saturday, March 8. They cap the weekend with a double-header against North Iowa Area on Sunday, March 9. First pitch each day is at 10 a.m.
