
OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – The No. 19-ranked Johnson County softball team continued to swing hot bats in a doubleheader sweep at Independence Tuesday afternoon. The Cavaliers collected 28 hits over the two games, 11 for extra bases including four home runs. JCCC opened the series with a 10-2 victory and followed with an 8-0 shutout.
In the opener, first baseman Aspen Burgardt, the reigning NJCAA Player of the Year, drove in four runs on three hits to pace JCCC's attack. She doubled home a run in the first inning and belted a three-run home run in the sixth. She also walked and scored in the third and doubled and scored in the fifth.
Head coach Aubree Brattin-Volkens also got key hits from catcher Maddie Murray, DP Lily Hans, second baseman Jaylee Jefferson, shortstop Izzy Carter and outfielder Haley Bryant.
Murray was 3-for-4 with a home run, two runs and two RBI. Hans had a single, double and RBI. Jefferson collected two singles and scored a run. Carter had an RBI single and scored and Brynt ripped a triple and scored.
Jalin Lavers was again solid in the circle. The sophomore right-hander allowed two runs off two hits with eight strikeouts over six innings pitched.
In the second game, freshman right-hander Elsa Carrillo started in the circle. She gave up just one single, walked two and struck out five to earn the one-hit shutout over the Pirates.
At the plate, Jefferson was 4-for-4 with two homers, three runs scored and five driven in. She belted a three-run home run to right field in the fifth and hit a two-run shot over the left field fence in the sixth.
Carter collected three hits, including a double and triple, scored three times and dove in one run. Murray again went 3-for-4 with a run driven in and Burgardt had two singles drove in a run.
Up next for the Cavaliers (23-12/12-2) is double header at home against the Coffeyville Red Ravens (9-21/4-8) on Thursday, April 17. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m. JCCC is one game out of first place in the conference standing behind Cowley, Kansas City Kansas and Neosho County at 11-1 in conference play.
