JCCC shuts out Iowa Lakes 3-0 to win home opener

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. -  The No. 3-ranked Johnson County Community College women's soccer team earned its first victory of the 2024 season with a 3-0 victor over Iowa Lakes Community College on Friday night, August 30 at the JCCC Soccer Complex.

The Lady Cavaliers jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the sixth minute when sophomore forward Leticia Tessi found the back of the net off a feed from freshman Lily Marshall. It was both players first points on the season. 

The scored remained 1-0 until the 83rd minute when Tessi notched her second goal of the match and season off a penalty kick to secure the victory.

Freshman midfielder Carmen Duarte scored her first collegiate goal in the final minute to make it 3-nil. Freshman defender Riggs Kuhn provided the assist, her first of the season. 

Sophomore goalkeeper Maddox Fergus stopped all five shots she faced to earn her first shutout of the season and eighth of her career. She is now 1-0-1 on the season. 

Johnson County (1-0-2) will look to notch their second win of the year on Monday evening, September 2, when they host State Fair Community College at 5 p.m. No. 10-ranked Iowa Central Community College comes to town on Wednesday, September 4. It will be the third top-10 team they have faced this season.
