No. 2 JCCC volleyball continues to roll

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. –  The No. 2 ranked Johnson County Community College volleyball team continued to roll through their schedule, going 5-0 last week to improve to 13-0 overall on the season. Four of their five wins were against top-ranked teams. 

JCCC opened the week with a sweep over Independence (25-7, 25-14, 25-15) in a Kansas Jayhawk Conference matchup. On Friday at the Kirkwood Classic, the Cavaliers downed No. 17 Lincoln Land 3-1 (25-10, 25-18, 22-25, 25-18) and No. 16 Illinois Central 3-1 (25-18, 23-25, 25-21, 25-17). The closed out the event on Saturday sweeping No. 7 Heartland (25-20, 25-22, 25-22) followed by a 3-1 win over No. 4 Parkland (25-22, 25-21, 24-26, 25-11). 

Sophomore right side hitter Isabella Flaska had a big week for the Cavaliers. She tallied 47 kills, highlighted by back-to-back double-digit efforts against Heartland and Parkland. She set a career high with 13 kills in the sweep over Heartland, then established a new career high with 16 against Parkland. She also hit an impressive .412 against the Cobras. For the week, Flaska hit .310 over 15 sets played and collected eight blocks. 

Running the offense were sophomore setter Sydney Fiatte and freshman setter Wren VanCleave. Fiatte tallied 105 assists over the week. She was in double figured in all five matches and in the wins over Illinois Central and Parland she had 26 in each match, her highest match totals of her career. She also recorded 34 digs and seven service aces. Fiatte currently ranks fourth in KJCCC D-II in assists with 238 and assists per set at 5.53. 

VanCleave was close behind with 93 assists, and hit double digits in all five matches, highlighted by a season high 24 in the win over Illinois central. She also set a season high with 14 digs in the match, giving her the first double-double of her career. VanCleave ranks seventh in the conference in total assists with 206 and ninth in assists per set at 4.90.

Defensively Emily Silvers was the team's top performer. The sophomore libero posted her best week of the season recording 95 total digs for an average of 5.27. She topped double figures in digs in all five matches and had 20 or more three times. Her 25-dig effort in the win over Lincoln Land set a new season high and her 22 dig totals against Illinois Central and Parkland tie for her third best efforts. Silvers currently ranks fourth in KJCCC D-II with 179 total digs and is third in digs per set at 4.84.

Other key performances were also posted by freshman outside hitter Tori Valentine (36 kills, 45 digs), freshman right side hitter Kennedy Smalley (41 kills, 25 digs) sophomore outside/right side hitter Sarina Ulberg (47 kills, 10 blocks) freshman middle/outside hitter Bella Hedke (27 kills, 15 blocks) and freshman middle hitter Chloe Carlgren (14 kills, 22 blocks)

Johnson County has a great chance to keep this momentum going moving forward. This week they travel to Iola to take on Allen who stands just 3-5 on the season. The following week they travel to Fort Scott to face a Greyhound squad that is currently 5-8 and cap the week across town at Kansas City Kansas Community College when they will take on Metropolitan (6-1), Southeast (5-8), St. Louis (0-16) and Park JV (6-0).
