Johnson County is the new No. 1 in NJCAA D-II volleyball

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – The Johnson County Community College volleyball team of to an amazing start to the 2023 season reeling off 13 wins, seven against teams that appeared in the national rankings. Last week, JCCC went 5-0, with four wins against top ranked teams including No. 7 Heartland and No. 4 Parkland. 

With that strong start, JCCC jumps Scottsdale Community College for the top spot in the NJCAA D-II rankings despite the fighting artichokes also remain unbeaten. Gulf Coast State College remained at No. 3. Cowley College moved up a spot to No. 4 ahead of Parkland who fell down to No. 5. 

This the 15 time the JCCC volleyball program has held the No. 1 ranking the 14th time under head coach Jennifer Ei. The last time the Cavaliers were the top team nationally was last season on October 10. They were ranked No. 1 for seven of the 11 polls during the season.

For Ei's teams, having a spot in the weekly rankings has become an expectation. Her teams have been ranked in 139 of 148 poll (94%). They have been in the top 10 in 120 of 148 polls (81%) and the top five in 96 of 148 (65%). 

Johnson County has a great chance to keep this momentum going moving forward. This week they travel to Iola to take on Allen who stands just 3-5 on the season. The following week they travel to Fort Scott to face a Greyhound squad that is currently 5-8 and cap the week across town at Kansas City Kansas Community College when they will take on Metropolitan (6-1), Southeast (5-8), St. Louis (0-16) and Park JV (6-0).
