Cavaliers split final two games at Brookhaven

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – After taking the first two games on opening day, the Johnson County Community College baseball had to settle for a split on day two against Brookhaven College.  The Bears took the first game on Saturday afternoon, 10-2, but the Cavaliers followed with a 1-0, seven inning shutout to take the series, 3-1.

In the opener, the Cavaliers scored a run in the top of the first and that held up until Brookhaven scored three in the bottom of the fourth, followed by seven in the fifth.

Johnson County bounced back thanks to an outstanding pitching performance from sophomore 6-6 right-hander Sloan Thomsen. He pitched a complete game three-hit shutout for his first win in a Cavaliers uniform. He also struck out five batter.

Sophomore All-American first baseman Malik Williams drove in sophomore Anthony Amicangelo in the top of the fourth for the game's only run. Williams finished the four-game series batting .333 (4-for-12) with two doubles and three RBI.

Johnson County is scheduled to host Ellsworth Community College in a four-game series beginning Friday, Feb. 15, but the long-range forecast calls for a snow storm for the area.
