Cavaliers pound Dodge City 14-7 in opening game of playoffs

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. –  The Johnson County baseball team open the 2022 postseason with an impressive 14-7 victory over Dodge City Wednesday afternoon.  The Cavaliers pounded out 15 hits, including three home runs. The most impressive came off the bat of outfielder Cooper Combs

Trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the third inning, Combs blasted a pitch over the wall for a grand slam, the first since 2014.  It was Combs 13th on the season, second-best on the team, while upping his RBI total to 54.

Outfielder Greg Ziegler belted a home run along with two singles to drive in four runners. He also scored three times.  Shortstop Easton Elliot had two hits and two RBI, and third baseman Jeremy Rader had a solo homer, a double and scored twice.

Second baseman and lead-off hitter Blake Mozley was 3-for-5 with three runs scored and an RBI, and DH Nick Iannantone and first baseman Colin Brueggemann each had an RBI.

Right-hander Danny Trehey picked up his fourth win of the season. In his five innings of work, he allowed three runs off four hits and struck out seven. 

Game two in the best-of-three series will take place Thursday at 1 p.m.
