OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – The 16th-ranked Johnson County Community College baseball team put on an offensive display while sweeping a four-game series with Ellsworth Community College. The Cavaliers outscored the Panther 36 to 12 and now stand 7-1 on the season.
Johnson County opened the series with a 7-2 win on Wednesday, followed by a 12-2 victory. On Thursday they opened with a 9-0 shutout and then completed the sweep with a 18-8 win.
In the opening win, Anthony Slaughter had the big bat, going 3-for-3 with a double and four RBI.
Zachary Ebert improved to 2-0 on season, allowing two runs on three hits with 10 strikeouts in his six innings of work.
Slaughter again ripped three hits and drove in a run in the second game but the big run producer was Derek Abeln. He belted two home runs and drove in five to lead the Cavaliers
Dylan Bierman evened his season record at 1-1 with six solid innings of work. He allowed two runs on two hits and struck out nine batters. Jon Moll and Will Heller each pitch one inning of scoreless relief.
In the 9-0 shutout to open play Thursday, Trey Ziegenbein scattered four hits over five innings and struck out seven to improve to 2-0. Matt Olsen followed with one inning that included three strikeouts, and Colby Ring pitched the final inning to close out the game.
At the plate, Anthony Amicangelo, Chris Esposito and Blake Shannon each had two hits and drove in two runners. Amancangelo's two hits were a double and a triple.
In the final game, Reid Briney had a single and home run and drove in four, and Landen Wood had two hits, three RBI and scored three times. Jaxon Walls also had three RBI and scored three times and Jacob Owens had two singles and drove in two runners.
On the mound, Sloan Thomsen, last week's Kansas Jayhawk Conference pitcher of the week, improved to 2-0 pitching 4.1 innings. AJ Shaw came in to get the final two outs and secure the series sweep.
