Cavaliers sweep Labette in conference opening series

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – The 12-ranked Johnson County Community College baseball team is on a role and this weekend, they overpowered Labette Community College to take all four games in the opening conference series of the season. 

The Cavaliers outscored the Cardinals 42-to-5, winning 11-0, 16-1, 7-1 and 8-3. They also extended their current win streak to 11 games and now stand 19-2 overall. 

In the opening game at Labette, sophomore right-hander Zachary Ebert improved his record to 5-0 with a 3-hit shutout. He also struck out 10 batters. 

Sophomore Anthony Amicangelo and freshman Anthony Slaughter each had two hits including a home run. Amicangelo drove in a game-high three runs, and Slaughter had two RBI. Also with two RBI was sophomore outfielder Jacob Owens

In the second game, Slaughter was 3-for-3 with two doubles, three runs scored and three driven in. Sophomore shortstop Chris Esposito had a single and triple to drive in a team-high four runs, and freshman DH Derek Abeln drove in three runs off two hits. Amicangelo drew a season-high four walks and scored three times. 

On the hill, sophomore Dylan Bierman allowed one run on two hits and six strikeouts over six innings. He now stand 3-1 on the season. Freshman Drew Garret did not allow a hit and struck out one to closes out the game. 

Back in Overland Park on Sunday, four players had multiple-hits in the 7-1 win. Amicangelo, sophomore Malik Williams, Slaughter and Owens each had two hits and scored a run. Williams, Slaughter and Owens each had an RBI.  Esposito belted a solo home run as well. 

Freshman Trey Ziebenbein improved to 5-0 with a complete-game victory. He allowed one run on three hits and struck out six batters. 

The Cavaliers completed the sweep with an 8-3 win in game four. Amicangelo drove in two runs, and Williams, Owens, Abeln and freshman Landen Wood each contributed one RBI.  Wood was 3-for-4 at the plate. 

Sophomore Sloan Thomsen pitched the first five innings to earn his fourth win against no losses on the season. He allowed three runs, two earned with six strikeouts.  Freshman Paul Rector pitched the final four innings to notch his second safe of the year. He did not allow a hit or run and struck out six batters.
