JCCC completes sweep over Labette to close out regular season

OVERLAND PARK, Kan – The No. 4-ranked Johnson County baseball team closed out his 2023 regular season by completing a sweep over Labette Saturday at JCCC, winning 6-1 and 8-3. They opened the series on Thursday in Parsons with wins of 10-2 and 25-7. The Cavaliers set a school record for the most wins in a regular season with 49, three better than the previous best season set in 1985. They also set a record for conference wins with a mark of 29-3. 

In the opener on Saturday, catcher Shae McGahan drove in a game-high three runs. He singled twice and walked once.

Left fielder Cooper Combs and DH Dagen Brewer also collected to two hits each and drove in a run, and third baseman Jeremy Rader had an RBI single.

On the hill, left-hander Ty Blecha managed to hold the Cardinals to just one run despite allowed seven hits and five walks over five innings. With the victory he upped his season record to 9-3.  Right-hander Drew Norris closed out the game with two scoreless innings in relief.

In the final game, first baseman Nicholas Sall had a double and a two-run homer run, his sixth on the season, and Brewer drove in two to power the offense.  

Right-hander Gabe Nutter got the start and victory, allowing three runs, one earned, with six strikeouts over four innings of work to keep is record perfect at 7-0. Right-hander Max Colombo, right-hander Dylan Graebener, right-hander Landon Fulk, left-hander Will Bolinger and right-hander Christian Johnson all logged an inning of scoreless relief. 

The Cavaliers (49-7) will begin their quest for a World Series berth on Wednesday May 10 when they host Colby (6-26) in a best of three series, with the winner advancing to Eck Stadium at Wichita State University May 17. The championship game for the Plains District Tournament will take place on May 21.
